Just opened up my Ibanez case and took a big whiff...nothing. Gonna sell it and buy a Stingray, I have to experience this magic. And does anyone know how I get my bass to taste like a Fender Jazz? I'm asking for a friend.
My 2002 Schecter Model T DeLeo has always had a distinct soap-like aroma. I bought a Schecter case with it and most always store the bass in it so I don't really know for sure whether it's the bass or the case. It's a nice smell! My 1970s SD Curlee Intl has always smelled like it lived in a remote log cabin that had a fire going constantly in the fireplace. Nice woody, smoky smell. None of the other 4 basses have any remarkable odors emanating from them. Weird....
Sterling Ball will personally come to your home and spritz your bass with a concoction made up of banned Ernie Ball forum members souls. He can also toast your neck with a custom neck toasting oven he keeps in his car.
Here's a start on the bass builder databass website: TBr GirlonBass (Terri) put together a searchable site http://www.bass-aholic.com/alpha.php that now has over 900 builders. Here's the original TB thread that started her journey: http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f8/150-bass-brands-698270/
It is the treatment they put on the necks. I'm sure of it. Even the basses smell a little like it when they are out of the case. I agree, it's quite nice!

Bert knows that smell.....not that there's anything wrong with it. In all honesty I've had 2 and they retained that smell for years and years. I actually liked it and would probably recognize it.
