I need a ruling...(bass vs. guitard)

  1. Yes. It's on the board, it's a pedal.

  2. No. If it doesn't change the sound, it's not a pedal. The Guitard is WRONG.

  1. Oh, Great TalkBass Community, I need your collective wisdom.

So, the guitard and I are having a fundamental disagreement. We both have extensive pedal boards, but I have the edge (15 pedals to his 12). However, he *claims* that he has more: he counts the following as 'pedals':

    - 2 Custom loopers (strictly signal routing)
    - his amp's channel selector (really?)
    - custom junction box (REALLY? No switch, just 1/4" ins and outs)

    - which puts him at 16.

His claim: if it's on the board and the signal goes in/comes out, it's a pedal.

My claim is that - it only counts if it changes or alters your signal in some way - which is why I don't count my tuner (he claims it should count).

So. I believe I am right. I need you - the Esteemed Talk Bass Community - to impart your support and lend a sense of gravitas and legitimacy to my rationale.

  2. If you don't step on it it's not a pedal.:D

If you step on it, it is.

My Line 6 X1 is on my pedalboard. It's not a pedal.

Are you sure you are not discussing the size of something else instead? What a great bunch of stupidity! This thread is going to be short.. or hilarious :)

    How sad for you both.

Your poll had no option for "complete waste of time," so I didn't vote.

  10. Um. It's kind of a joke? I realize that sarcasm doesn't translate through the intertubes, but maybe I didn't make it obvious enough.

    (ahem)

My apologies for offending anyone's sensibilities.

I have a pedal tuner. It does mute the signal when I tune, so it does change the sound of my bass when it's in use.

  12. Are we a "Great TalkBass Community" or an "Esteemed TalkBass Community?" Make up your damn mind.

And if you operate it with your foot, it's a pedal. Any ancient Roman could tell you that.

this is the humor section. haha

that being said, you need to designate between 'pedal' and 'foot pedal'.

I guess if it has a switch then it's a pedal, but if the switch does not affect the signal in any way then it is not an effect pedal.

Either way. You are certainly on the right track.

Nothing impresses chicks like a huge bunch of pedals. When you tell them you hooked them up yourself. She will think you are like one of those electronic ham-radio or AV nerds and the panties just come flying off after that.

If he did that he would be back-pedaling.

    ?what?

So to clarify - a 'pedal' is a foot-actuated "something"
Not all 'pedals' are -effects-. This -may- have been what the OP was trying desperately to ask...

If it does not affect the sound, it is not an effect.
If it is not an effect, it does not belong in the 'effect' forum which, I suppose, is how it wound up here...

  18. I KNOW! Nothing gets the wife in the mood quicker than me showing off the pedalboard and talking about the signal chain.

Sometimes, all I have to do is whisper 'true bypass' in her ear and it's bigsexytime.

Scrap the # of pedals...the competition should be based on the number of LED's and associated retina-searing brightness. Extra points if the LED's flash or move (a la bargraph) in response to the input signal.

Automatic disqualification if, in spite of the sheer number of pedals, the rig still sounds like $%*& despite repeated adjustment throughout the course of the gig.

Too late for that. The thread has been reported. Hopefully, they'll go easy on you, and you won't be banned.
