I have been on the lookout for a second hand 5 string bass to start with (I mean start the 5er, I've been playing bass for close to 20 years).

Essentially I brought it down to the three above mentioned instruments:
    Ibanez BTB 505 - $500
Yamaha NTB5II - $320 (added new active electronics)
    Fernandes APB5 - $530 (hardshell case included)

The thing is, I cannot try them prior (ordering from a distanced seller), so I was wondering if you could help me make an informed decision. The main issues:
    - what is the string spacing on those?
    - scale length on Yamaha?
    - how does the neck feel?

    Overall value for the money?

    Thanks in advance!

I can only help with the BTB, but:
Nice, wide string spacing (18mm) this makes it much easier to transition from 4 string to 5.
The neck is wide, but very flat and thin. You will probably either love it or hate it.
Over all, BTBs are very good value for money, well built and feel like home to me.

    YMMV of course.
