For me it is "Mercy In Me" by Todd Agnew.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PN7Xl6uh9Ww

This year am slowly accepting the fact that people look to me for leadership and that makes me uncomfortable.
They probably look to me because I am not dogmatic or didactic. I can be a good listener but mostly because I have outlasted many of my peers. Some of them are dead, some have become burned out cynics, some are indifferent and just want to be left alone, some are just plain nuts, others are still lost in their addiction. So that leaves me a guy who is at least willing to try and help.
I am here now and I choose to embrace who I am.

"I don't know what you want or what you see in me."

What about you, is there music that defines your year?

"I stand on the hill, not for a thrill, but for the breath of a fresh kill.
Never mind the man who contemplates
    doin' away with license plates.
He stands alone, anyhow, bakin' the cookies of discontent
by the heat of the laundromat vent.
Leavin' his soul!" Then like in poetry I go dot-dot-dot, you know, kinda off center, then I drop down and then I go:
"Leavin' his soul! And partin' the waters of the medulla oblongata of - -brrrrrr! - -mankind!"

That was a damn good song, wasn't it, Doyle?

I found Glenn Hughes and Black Country Communion in 2013. Hands down the best band I've heard in twenty years..

Not exactly a song for 2013, but a song that defines middle age for me is "Teenage Angst" by Cracker (ironic song title, I know). To me it means feeling comfortable in my own skin, having my own opinions, and being able to be joyful when surrounded by so much misery.

I've heard that Counting Stars song endlessly this year. Catchy song, but there's a limit.

This song! Catchy tune. The girls are just adorable and the lyrics to this song are quite inspirational (to me, at least)

    AKB48

    River (English translation)

    Move forward! (Got it!)
Don’t you dare halt! (Got it!)
Our aim is that place where the sun rises
Walk on the path of hope!

What blocked this path is a River! River! River!
    A stretched-out River!
    The fated River! River! River!
    An ordeal River!

    Cast aside your doubts!
    Show your willpower!
    Don’t hesitate!
    Take a step, Right now!
    Believe yourself!

    Forward, forward!
    Go straight forward!
Cross the river!! Ho! Ho! Ho! Ho!

    Dreams always*
    Seem far away
They feel out of your reach
Pick up one of the stones at your feet
    And throw it
    With all your might!

    Running before your eyes
    There’s a river
    A big, wide river
Even if it’s deep and dark
Even if the current is fast
You don’t need to be afraid
    It may be far away
But, yes, there’s a bank on the other side
    Have more faith in yourself

    Swim with all your might
    Through the dark
Don’t look back! Ho! Ho! Ho! Ho!

When you stretch out your hand
    You’ll find your future there
Don’t give up, thinking you can’t reach it
    The stone you threw
Will make your dream come true
You won’t even hear it land

    There’s a river
    Running in your heart too
    The river of hard times
Even if things don’t go well
Even if you almost drown sometimes
    Just try again
    Don’t give up
    There’ll be a bank
You’re sure to get there someday

    Get over it!
    River!

    Ah-ah-ah-ah-
    Don’t make excuses to yourself!
    Ah-ah-ah-ah-
You won’t know until you try!
    Ah-ah-ah-ah-
Nothing for it but to go straight forward!

    Keep on walking
    Forever, forever, forever
    Down the road you’ve chosen!

    There’s a river
    Running before your eyes
    A big, wide river
Even if it’s deep and dark
Even if the current is fast
You don’t need to be afraid
    It may be far away
But, yes, there’s a bank on the other side
    Have more faith in yourself

    There’s a river
    Running in your heart too
A river of sweat and tears!
    Even if you fail
    Even if you’re swept away
    Just start over
    Never say die
    Hang onto your dreams
Until the day your wishes come true

    Cross the river!
    You can do it!

Brave by Sara Bareilles I like the message.

    "Brave"

    You can be amazing
You can turn a phrase into a weapon or a drug
    You can be the outcast
Or be the backlash of somebody’s lack of love
Or you can start speaking up
Nothing’s gonna hurt you the way that words do
When they settle ‘neath your skin
Kept on the inside and no sunlight
    Sometimes a shadow wins
But I wonder what would happen if you

    Say what you wanna say
And let the words fall out
Honestly I wanna see you be brave

With what you want to say
And let the words fall out
Honestly I wanna see you be brave

    I just wanna see you
    I just wanna see you
    I just wanna see you
I wanna see you be brave

    I just wanna see you
    I just wanna see you
    I just wanna see you
I wanna see you be brave

    Everybody’s been there,
Everybody’s been stared down by the enemy
    Fallen for the fear
    And done some disappearing,
    Bow down to the mighty
Don’t run, just stop holding your tongue
Maybe there’s a way out of the cage where you live
Maybe one of these days you can let the light in
Show me how big your brave is

    Say what you wanna say
And let the words fall out
Honestly I wanna see you be brave

With what you want to say
And let the words fall out
Honestly I wanna see you be brave

And since your history of silence
    Won’t do you any good,
    Did you think it would?
Let your words be anything but empty
Why don’t you tell them the truth?

    Say what you wanna say
And let the words fall out
Honestly I wanna see you be brave

With what you want to say
And let the words fall out
Honestly I wanna see you be brave

    I just wanna see you
    I just wanna see you
    I just wanna see you
I wanna see you be brave

    I just wanna see you
    I just wanna see you
    I just wanna see you
    See you be brave

    I just wanna see you
    I just wanna see you
    I just wanna see you

    I just wanna see you
    I just wanna see you
    I just wanna see you

This is such a great song, and it sums up what was a pretty hard 2013.

    http://youtu.be/OW7WH2j4Y3o

.....Well sometimes you can't change and you can't choose
And sometimes it seems you gain less than you lose
Now we've got holes in our hearts, yeah we've got holes in our lives
Where we've got holes, we've got holes but we carry on....

    Miley Cyrus's wrecking ball obviously.
No song better defines the vanity of entertainment in this era.

Ohhh, good call. Still vain but a lot more positive than my choice.
