Anyone else have a Japanese copy? I have an early to mid 70s Univox Stereo Bass which is a 4001 copy. The bass looks really really nice and the construction is almost spot on, as it only has 1 truss rod. The other problem it has is very high action up at the higher frets. I actually don't like using it live because of that, and the fact that the pickups feedback.

On the other hand, I have a 1979 Tokai Les Paul copy that is the best les paul I have ever played. I will never get rid of that thing.

What sparked my interest in this thread was that there are many Japanese basses for sale on ebay for really cheap. I know its hit or miss, as with most companies. Although I assume it's fair to say that there are more misses with these copy companies, than hits.

There are some good companies to look out for though.

    -Tokai
    -Greco
    -Burny
    -Ibanez
    -Orville (mostly guitars)
    -Univox

Most of the best were made in the Matsumoku factory in Japan.

These companies made some really great copies, and some had some really great designs themselves.
