If anyone can tell me what they can see on this guys pedal board (besides the line 6 dm4) I'll be very happy. I NEED this sound or my entire life will have been a failure. .You can catch a glimpse at around 3 minutes in.

just to add. i have deep impact and digitech synth wah already. sold my korg g5 and have tried the ehx and wasn't impressed - none of the come close to the tone he has.

If this is the video you're talking about http://youtube.com/watch?v=MUsUljsDBg8

I'd try Octave->Fuzz->Wah. While it may not be how he did it, I'd wager you could get pretty close. Try it out. ;-D

If that is the video, as you can see, the bass player is somehow manipulating a filter with a pedal. I think I could make this sound with the Pigtronix Disnortion (Fuzz setting) into the Pigtronix EP-1. I run the clean trigger signal through a volume pedal in order to control how/when the filter opens by use of a pedal.

Cool sound. I think an octave down is used too, as Spanky said. Perhaps a clean octave down blended with the fuzz and foot-controlled filter? Compression before all of it?

This has come up before, and I'm convinced it's just a wah pedal placed after an unidentified synth and/or fuzz/octave combination.

Anyway, here's a list of other synths to get you thinking:

    Out of Production
    Akai Deep Impact
    Korg G5
    Boss ME-_B
    Boss SYB-3

    Currently Produced
    EHX Bass Microsynth
    Roland GR-20

    Line 6 FM-4

    On the cheap
    Digitech BSW
    Ibanez SB7

    Jerry Rig
    Octave-->Fuzz-->Filter

Those are the popular ones that I know of. If I'm missing any, be sure to let me know.

Thanks for the list Spanky. Like I said though, the deep impact, Korg G5 or digitech synth wah don't even come in synth terms. The only one of the above I'm not familiar with is the roland GR20. I'll have a look.
I'm more incline to go with your jerry rig. was wondering if a boss oc2 into a dod fx25 might get me close.

Honestly it seemed like more of a wah than a filter since he was controlling the effect with his foot.

??? I can think of a few filters that have an expression pedal input.

But when he wasn't using the expression pedal, there was no sweep. (at least not that I recall right now)

I can set my MAM RS-3 to be controlled only by the foot pedal, and I bet some other high-end filters are also able to disengage the envelope follower.

Plus wheatever fuzz/ditortion is on there could have flattened out the envelope enough that it sounds constant until he has at it with the expression pedal...

No, just a poor deluded soul blinded by the glory of the Envelope Followers. :)

hold the phone... you guys owe me about 15 minutes of my life back for this one!

So there's your exp. pedal shenanigans potentially solved. The moogerfooger LPF is not far from what I suggested.

I'm guessing the both the OC2 and OC3 do this equally well- right?
Or to put it another way- does the OC3 have a specific advantage over the OC2?

I think the OC-3 has a mode that sounds like the OC-2. For some reason I read that the OC-3 doesn't track as well, but maybe that is just rumor?

Edit: that last clip sounds alot like my EBS octabass in high mode (I think that is the right one) with the octave cranked.
