Just had my first full lesson with my new bass teacher. Feeling MEGA good right now :) picked up all the parts (inc solo) to RHCP- otherside, just gotta put them together in time now. My teacher was really impressed at my speed picking things up- says teaching me songs is gonna be easy.
He also said I have a really good ear, which was news to me :D
AND he's really excited to tab out a song for me that hasn't been tabbed before (looked online for it everywhere). Can't wait to go back.
I will be insufferable to my non- bassist friends for a few days now :p

That's very cool. I've been taking lessons for a couple of years now. There are times where different things really click and you reach another milestone. It feels good every time.

    Have fun with it.

    Hi,

This reminds me of the old joke.....

Son returns from his first lesson.

    Dad: How'd it go?
Son: Great! I learned all the parts of the bass, the neck, body, control knobs, tuners, frets, etc.
    Dad: Wow! Good job son!

Son returns from his second lesson.

    Dad: How'd it go?
Son: Great! I learned how to tune the strings. This is E, this is A, this is D, and this is G. And I learned what the frets are for.
    Dad: Wow! Good job son!

Son retuns from his third lesson.

    Dad: How'd it go?
Son: I didn't go to my lesson today. I got a gig! :D

It sounds like you will do well. Keep up the hard work. I would encourage you to learn how to read music properly; scales, arpeggios, key signatures, time signatures, note values, etc, i.e. music theory. This will make you a more versatile player and make you more valuable later in your career.

    Break a leg!

    Thank you for your indulgence,

    BassCliff

    Thanks basscliff :)
I announced to my teacher that I want to learn to read music again (was taught in school so it should all come back)

My only regret is not getting lessons the first time around!

You're clearly a smart one. Tabs cheat you out of so much.

This. I never learned to read music and it has been the single largest impediment to my advancement as a player. I've got a good ear and can follow the Nashville numbers pretty good, but stick a chart in front of me and I'm like a christmas turkey, stick a fork in me because I'm done.

Yeah, rhythm being the main thing! Though it does come in handy, my teacher was calling out notes to me and I wasn't getting it (still learning) so I asked him to pull up the tab, then played what he was asking.

I can almost sight read tab, I'd love to get to that stage with sheet.
