Just saw the trailer for the seemingly "epic" Mandella movie.

I find it strange that this has come out so soon after his passing.
    Prolly a marketing thing.

I had a feeling this would happen, but not THIS soon.:eyebrow:

I was also hoping Morgan Freeman would be cast to play Mandella.(He'd make a perfect Mandella in his later years):D

Yeah tell me about it. Back in high school, when I was movie illiterate, I actually thought that was Nelson Mandela playing Nelson Mandela.

It was actually released a week before he died, and was obviously in production since long before.

On a tangentially related note, the bloke playing Mandela in this film has been in a great British crime series called Luther. Fans of Columbo, Sherlock Holmes, and hardboiled will be well served to check it out.

Luther is great - and I think Idris Elba previously found success in 'The Wire' in the US. The news of Mandela's death actually broke during the UK premiere of the film.

I liked Invictus because it was about unifying a country still reeling from apartheid, restructuring, and the animosities that remained.

Not sure I'm going to like a movie about Mandella himself and his rise to power, because I know the story, and there are many things about the man of which I do not approve. He has a violent past and socialist leanings. If that's your cup of tea, or you don't mind a Hollywood whitewash glorification, enjoy. I'll probably be skipping this one.

I think it's based on his autobiography, and isn't a whitewash from what I've read. Whatever you think of his politics and methods, he wasn't a saint, and I don't think the film portrays him as such.

    ^This.

I seem to recall there being mention that some of his family were at the premier and hadn't known he had fallen so ill, didn't find out til after the film that he had just passed.

It's good to see someone else realizes this.

Many idolize people like Che and don't realize the whole story.

Oliver Stone should have done the film.

What they actually idolize is the opportunity to appear hip for only a small financial commitment (the price of a shirt) whilst expending zero actual effort. The shirt is, in essence, a bird-call stating "look at me, this is who I am, I declare myself part of the cool-herd".

That, sadly, is the extent of the thought process.

Oh, you do not "approve" of a man who went through things you can't imagine.

Thanks for bringing THAT insight to the board.

    You're welcome.

There seems to be no shortage of threads and posts on TB in which you outline what you do and don't approve of.

One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter, just depends on which side of the cause you're on. Given the apartheid government's tactics I don't see how there was any way to bring it down but by internal violence and the pressure of the rest of the rest of the world. Secondly, when you're an oppressed have-not, socialism probably looks better than it would to a 'have'. I'm sure many British subjects in the years after our revolution thought the Founders should have been hanged. Some still might to this day, but I'm not in a position to know.

I don't think there is anything in Mandela's history to whitewash. He did what he had to do and helped rebuild his country. He is a towering figure, imho.

    Well-worded insight, I respect that.

I think the best work Mandella did was when he used diplomatic means to achieve the desired ends. It seems it took him a life of crime and some prison time to come to the conclusion that he might get better results that way. I credit F.W. DeKlerk just as much for the progress as Mandella. Somehow, I don't think they'll be making a movie about DeKlerk anytime soon.

DeKlerk certainly deserves some credit, I agree, but by the same token there wasn't much else that he could have done. Apartheid's time was over. The other person I give great credit to is Bishop Desmond Tutu. He actually spoke at my church when I was a kid, something I will never forget. His presence was and is indescribable.

It would not have come to a swift or peaceful end through violence. Peaceful men like Tutu and DeKlerk (who is most responsible for brokering the deal to end apartheid at the price of intense political backlash) are the heroes here, not Mandela IMHO.

You're free to think that violence was the only way, but that was a miscalculation even Mandela would later admit.

And then again, there are his politics and socialist leanings. If that also makes sense to you, you are entitled to it. But that does not resonate well with many others.

But it does resonate well with many others again. I'm sure none of them are going to force you to watch the movie.
