Ok I will say that I love Lakland! Anyway, I have used DR Sunbeams on 2 - 55-01's for a couple of years now and really like the tone. My issues now are 1) I am playing much warmer than before (modern country gig) and 2) I really don't have the time to wait for the Sunbeams to break in. They seem to me to be way too bright out of the package. I need to change the strings on both basses and would like suggestions of what string I should be looking at. I'm sure you guys will know.

My advice is to stick with the Sunbeams and use the preamp on your bass to cut treble until the strings are broken in. If you like broken-in Sunbeams there is nothing else that will substitute IME, especially for 5-string.

This. Flats would be the next step from Sunbeams.
