Matt Pulcinella Basses

Discussion in 'Basses [BG]' started by fenderjazz68, Aug 9, 2004.

  1. Ok, so I walk into a local shop today looking for a 6 string..... my first.

The salesman shows me a used Matt Pulcinella 6 string, I never heard of him even though the shop is not too far from me.

Anyway, I play a used carvin which was pretty nice but it didn't beat the sound of the Pulcinella. The salesman swears it's a killer bass ( I believe him based on the rep of the store) so I bought it without knowing anything about the maker.

    Any experience with them ?

    Thanks

i hate the look of them but i heard they sound great. Post a pic anyway ive only seen a few.

  5. It seems really nice, light and balances really well. I got it for what they said they traded it in for, $950, it has a natural finish and looks like either alder or swamp ash.....

  6. I'll steal the camera from work as soon as I get off of vacation.

I went to his site yesterday and am totally gassing for his level 5JJ basses. Those look very nice and the appointments are just what I'm looking for. Now to come up with $1500.00.

I had a Level 5 a couple of years back and really liked the bass. It was light and it balanced very well on a strap. Had plenty of tone, especially nice slap tone. Let it go due to some serious GAS. Wouldn't mind having another one. They are a lot of Bass for the price and Matt stands behind his basses. Enjoy it!!!

  12. I have a Pulcinella Level 5 and I love it!! I had not played Matt's basses before but his reputation (and the Bass Player mag review) all said it would be a winner. Based on your price, you got a good deal. Usually the 5's go for around $1,000. A 6 for $950 is a winner.

Mine has an ash body with a maple neck and fingerboard. It's a simple recipe, but it just sounds and plays great.

Yours looks like a black korina body with a wenge neck and board. Looks also like Bart soapbars with the Bart preamp. Mine has a push/pull midrange pot to boost and cut at 2 different frequencies. I also have a push/pull active/passive on the volume pot. You may want to see if you have these features as well.

    Here's a pic of mine.

    Enjoy!!

Matt's basses are absolutely killer. I have had a custom MPG-6 for about a year and it's been really awesome. I have it up for sale right now (see below) only for financial reasons. You won't be disappointed, though, in the quality, sound and above all playability of Matt's instruments. Let me know if you have any other questions on his basses, or anything else.

Yowza, that's me in that photo. The bass belongs to a mutual friend of ours.

This was my first exposure to a Pulcinella and I was quite impressed.

I paid for all my gear myself. Well, me and MasterCard.
Note that the guy in the pic is not the owner of the bass (hi Bob). I am. :D

I'm really loving this Level 6! The ergonomics and balance are the best features of this bass. Zon4John got the construction right: wenge neck & board, black korina (limbia) body, Bart M5 soapbars and NTMB pre.

I like the MP body shape. I'm not crazy about the headstock though.

And I think I own his first wenge necked bass. Very sweet. Also own a 5JJ. I'm not sure which I like better.
