One would think that with a pair of brass ones as big as his he'd fall even faster!

I love how the curvature of the earth is visable.

    What an incredible feat!

That was great. I found this thread when I was listening to the Easy Rider soundtrack. He went up in the balloon during "Wasn't Born To Follow" and jumped out at "If You Want To Be A Bird."

Beautiful. I never get tired of watching that initial drop from the capsule camera, but this footage puts a whole new perspective on it.

I love the way he controls his breathing.

    And doesn't scream.

I certainly wouldn't have been able to stay concious while violently spinning at 700+ mph. Holy crap that was intense footage!

He is the baddest dude who ever lived.

I defer to him on all things.

I just had the most amazing moment of synchronicity!

A ways into the video, I decided to crank up Bowie's Space Oddity while leaving the video's audio on.

    • Felix's jump corresponded to "This is ground control to Major Tom" right after the blast off/musical build up
    • Felix's spin starts slowly with the guitar solo
    • Felix's "I'm in a violent spin" corresponded to "Your circuit's dead, there's something wrong!"
    • Felix pulls out of the spin right in time for tension release of "here, am I sitting in a tin can"
    • Felix touched down right as the song ended!

EDIT: You probably want to start Space Oddity somewhere around the 2:25 mark

Falling at 847 mph without anything more than a space suit... this man is an inspiration.

If you've ever had a chance to read more on Felix Baumgartner, he's a fascinating, and driven, man!

It takes me a good 1-2 minutes to decide to jump into water from a 2-3 meters height.

He literally jumps from the space into the earth and doesn't even think about it for a second more. He was so ready to do it, unbelievable...

I dare say there's a point where it doesn't matter how much further up you go, as long as the gravity still gets you, you risk pancaking :ninja:

Indeed. Besides, hitting the ground from that much height, you wouldn't feel a thing. It'd be almost as peaceful as checking out in sleep.

    Almost...:ninja:

Peaceful, bar the few thousand feet of "$&@! my parachute didn't work" :bag:

Yeah, he slows way down in the lower atmosphere.

His heart rate peaked at ~180bpm, not bad for a 44 year old.
