Hey, I'm just wondering if the MXR Bass PreAmp can be used simply as a clean boost?
For the direct out, you would just turn the pre/post switch to "Pre EQ" and you would just adjust the input and output signal levels. Running it to an amp with the 1/4" output, you may have to adjust the EQ to your liking, but then I would think it would work just fine for boosting your volume level.
I don't have this model, I have the MXR M80. It's a little different as it has separate clean and distortion channels. The clean channel gives an option to "color" the signal with the EQ or just use the volume knob alone to set your level. I would think that the Bass Preamp pedal functions similarly to the clean channel of the M80, though I am not sure on that.

true or false? the input adds gain to your dry and the output increases the overall volume.
if so, to boost your signal turn the output right.
