The E string on my new bass has a really bad chorus/harmonic sound when fretted. Open E sounds cool, but I notice the sound at the third fret and it gets worse as you go up the neck. It's bad at the 12th fret. The string is 7/64'' from the closest pickup pole. Happens no matter which pickup is solo'd.

I'm not sure if this makes a difference or not, the E string bridge saddle sits farther forward than most. I changed the string for another and no change in intonation and no difference in the offending tone.

are you letting the string get twisted up as you wind it?

the trick is to get some winds on the post, but before it actually tightens up push the ball end out of the back of the bridge; chances are that ball will spin around at least once, untwisting the string.

it should sound better after that.

I rewound the string-no change. By the way, it's strung with the windings on top (forcing the string down.)

Try lowering the pickup. It sounds like a classic case of too much pull on the strings from the magnets.

The MM pickup is as far as it will go. I cannot press it down with my fingers and the screws are on the verge of being boogered. I think I'm going to have to send this one back.

This is typical for a tapered or exposed core string but not one with full wraps from stem to stern. What's your deal? BTW, did you set your witness points at both bridge and nut? What kind of bass and can you post some close-up pics?

Don't send it back just as of yet. This may be a simple fix.

Is your E string nut slot cut evenly? Could be causing a harmonic overtone if its not seated properly.

I'd bet on a twisted string though. Don't manually wrap the string around the tuner post by hand, but rather take the time to crank the string to tension.

On other thing. Ceiling fans. make sure your not standing under one, as they will cause an oscillating effect on your tone. sounds crazy, but true.

I have the same problem with an Epi Thunderbird. Sounds like a distinct chorus-y effect when I play it. I was wondering what caused it but didn't want to get into a lengthy search-and-maybe-fix situation so I just put it away and played another bass. Still would like to know what causes that though.

After much fiddlin', it still remains. Here is what I have done to the bass:

    Shimmed neck
    Checked all screws
    Set intonation/neck relief
Changed E string (winding is correct)
Moved amp to different room (my house is very resonant, just checking.)
    Lowered pickups

Problem still remains. Awful chorus sound pronounced at the 12 fret on up.

7/64'' is what Fender recommends, that was at the closest point. The sound actually seems worse as the the note sustains.

Does it do it with all 3 pickups? Can you toggle between the 3 P'ups individually?

My guess: bad string. Contact D'addario.

Try lower then? Maybe keep lowering to see if it goes away at least.

Have you lowered all the pickups? That's a lotta magnetic pull, from those 3.

I didn't want to go lower (I was afraid of losing bottom end.) I kept on screwing them down (pretty dadgum far!) until there is a tiny bit above the 14 th fret on the E. I don't go up there so it's good. These pickups are pretty hot.

Why hasn't anyone asked if the issue is still there when you're playing it ampless?
