My kids' elementary school has a field day each June where everyone does all kinds of activities outside. I go to the PTA meetings and I helped arrange another short music show for something this past winter and everyone loved it, so they asked me to put something together for Field Day. The suggestion was 30-45 minutes worth of music. The kids are kindergarten thru 4th grade. I'm trying to figure out what to play. I want it to be good music and not insipid pop music, but we can't be playing YYZ or Jaco, either. I'd like it to be fun and engaging, and hopefully I can also make it funny and have a good amount of audience participation. One thing the principal does NOT want is dancing. She said that the kids get nuts and the big kids end up squashing the smaller kids.

So far I'm thinking Bruno Mars - You Can Count on Me (my kids like it...), The Eels - Now You're Really Living, something by Michael Franti...that sort of lighthearted stuff. Also stuff about summer since it's the end of the school year.

I also want to put together some schtick to make it funny and entertaining. Like musical slapstick.

Anyway...if anyone has any suggestions, I'd love to hear them.

    Thank you!

"Don't Eat the Yellow Snow" by Zappa

    "Dreamed I was an Eskimo
    Frozen wind began to blow
Under my boots and around my toes
The frost that bit the ground below
It was a hundred degrees below zero...

    And my mama cried
    And my mama cried
    Nanook, a-no-no
    Nanook, a-no-no
    Don't be a naughty Eskimo
Save your money, don't go to the show

Well I turned around and I said "Oh, oh" Oh
Well I turned around and I said "Oh, oh" Oh
Well I turned around and I said "Ho, Ho"
And the northern lights commenced to glow
And she said, with a tear in her eye
"Watch out where the huskies go, and don't you eat that yellow snow"
"Watch out where the huskies go, and don't you eat that yellow snow"

    Beatles - Octopus's Garden

Kids seem to love it and it's a quality song (did Ringo really write this song all by himself?!)

Hi, I teach elementary school music. Beatles tunes is a great suggestion. Yellow Submarine, Octopus' Garden, that Hello Goodbye one. Basically anything. I've had excellent results with those.

That's too bad about no dancing. I don't know your school but that sounds ridiculous to me.

You could also sing folk melodies.

First thing that popped into my head was some upbeat stuff from The Beach Boys.

Big difference between K and 4th graders (interest in music, attention span, etc.).

+1 for The Beatles, maybe something like All Together Now.

You could probably get away with a Barrett/Floyd song, if you are into that. If it were me, I would for sure put a medley together of some Syd songs. Many of his songs have a child-like feel to them. No one would even recognize them, but I would know.
