New Bass Big Muff, Something is Wrong. Any advice?

    Hi Folks,

    I just bought a new electroharmonix bass big muff π.
    After plugging it in, it doesn't sound the way I assume it's supposed to (this is my first foray into using a pedal(s) so please excuse any ignorance on my part). I've watched various youtube demos of this pedal, and none exhibit the issues I am experiencing. They all sound MUCH cleaner with much better response.

    There is a LOT of sound clipping and the volume goes up and down while sustaining a note or while playing steadily, especially when the toggle is in the Bass Boost or Normal settings.
    When in the Dry setting, I have to turn the bbm volume knob to at least 3/4 full to get any fuzz out of it.

    When sustaining a note the sound will die out quickly, almost sounds like it's cutting off.

    Also, the tone pot is noisy (through the amp) when I turn it.

    Things I have done to try and get a different outcome, but with no change in the outcome:

    -Used 2 different amplifiers (no change)
    -Played it through 3 different basses, all of them active. I have no passive basses. (no change)
    -Swapped out batteries in the bbm (no change)
    -I was going from the output of the bass to my tuning pedal, from the tuning pedal to the bbm, and from the bbm to the input of my amp(s). I removed the tuning pedal from the equation (no change).
    -I used different cables (no change)
    -I had a suspicion that the wiring of my speaker cab was reversed (long story) so I switched the 2 leads to the speaker (no change)
    -When I switch off the bbm, my signal is clean, strong and sounds as it should.

    No, I have not swapped out batteries on the 3 basses I used because a) 2 have been installed within the last 3 weeks and b) it seems improbable that all 3 batteries in all 3 basses are bad.

    Can anyone offer any input or suggestions?

    So, you're of the opinion that it is malfunctioning and it's not user (my) error?

    I ask because I bought it from a (reputable) online shop in another EU country, so returning it will involve some shipping back and forth and down time. I'm sure that, if it is malfunctioning, they will replace it for me, but I want to exhaust all user related issues before calling them.

    Thanks for the info.

    I did do a search as well and read through several of the posts.

    I just came back from trying it out on a friends bass and amp. Same issues.

    Many of the posts complaining are about a general lack of volume.
    The problem I'm having is that it cuts the volume and then gets loud again, or completely clips the sound as if there is a sound gate in the unit.
    Or, instead of a fuzz, it sounds more like an envelope filter or a phaser, where the volume goes up and down. You can hear the wave.

    Definitely sounds like a faulty unit to me.
    I can't see any way that what you're describing could be user error

    Return it before its to late. It's admirable to exaust the"user error" possibilities and it sounds like you've double checked everything. Unfortunately you'll probably be out the extra shipping unless the store has a great return policy. Good luck!!!

    I just got off of the phone with the company. They were more than happy to accommodate me.

    I was given 2 options:

    1) Send them back the faulty unit. They will cover shipping costs back to them.
    Once they receive the faulty unit they will send me a new unit free of charge and they will cover the shipping costs to me.

    2) I can buy a new unit. I will not be charged the shipping costs to me for the new unit.
    At the same time I will send them back the faulty unit. They will cover shipping costs to them.
    Once they receive the faulty unit, they will refund me to money I paid to buy the 2nd unit.

    I chose option 2 as it will have a new one at my door within a week.

    Option 1 would have taken about 2+ weeks between shipping the bad one to them and them shipping the new one to me. I need the unit sooner than that.

    All in all a very easy and pleasurable transaction. One of the major reasons I enjoy dealing with this company. One of the best, in my opinion.

    I love it when things go smoothly.

    I wanted to let everyone that helped me out know the latest.

    I just received the new Bass Big Muff in the mail. Plugged it in and it works great!
    Just like it's supposed to.

    You're absolutely right.

    The company is Thomann, located in Germany.

    Haha! Before you named them, I thought "I bet that's Thomann"! Their customer service is second to none.
