Please join me in celebrating the high quality short scale basses that Jimmy Wilson of Landing Guitars is creating. While it may a bit premature of me to start this club as I presently do not yet have my Landing bass in my possession, I just could not help myself. Once my bass arrives I'll be sure to discuss the details of fit and finish and tone. At this point I can tell you that Jimmy has been very helpful and available to me as a customer. Him and I have exchanged multiple emails in one day many times. He is very attentive to emails and in my experience his communication with me has been very good.

He managed to produce pretty much perfectly what I was looking for in terms of a custom instrument. That is a short scale bass in the style of a Fender Tele Guitar. I opted for a single Darkstar pickup in the "sweet" spot. I am not super familiar with the tone of this pickup, but a fellow local TBer "Loopee" aka Louise was kind enough to let me demo her DS equipped Landing. After I tried it out I was confident that the DS would work for my tone. I was equally satisfied that Landing would deliver up to my expectations.

While there are more and more bass manufacturers producing short scale basses, its nice to have ss basses being taken seriously, there are still only a handful of luthiers that specialize in these 30" scale instruments. My understanding is that Landing is among some of the finest makers of top quality short scale basses.

Here is a pic of my completed Landing Tele Bass:

    Specs:

    30" scale
    single Darkstar pickup
    DS integrated thumbrest
    Mahogany body / ash top
    maple neck / rosewood fingerboard
    Hipshot ultralite tuners
    Hipshot Model A bridge
    Hipshot string retainers
    string through body
    Dark brown satin finish
    Dunlop flushmount straplocks
    .47 orange drop capicator
white fretmarkers on the sides but not front
    graphite nut

Perhaps the "club" thing is getting a bit old, but for those that do want a number I'd be happy assign those upon request. The one request I will make is that you please post a pic of your Landing bass so we can all marvel at its beauty. :bassist:

Sweet bass Torin ! It will look so much better in person than the pic. Jimmy's could use a little work on his photography skills (not that I'm any good my self).

    I'm in :)

Here's mine, started as a fretted but exchanged the neck for a fretless. It has EMG's with the BQS system. Jimmy's also working on a fretless P bass for me.

Beautiful! I've been admiring Landings for a while but unfortunately my budget is still in the Rondo/Squire range...

Never heard of these...nice. Any reason why he would mainly build short scale?

That's a good question. Probably wants to focus on a niche market. I'm almost certain he's done and will do 34" as well. Best thing to do is email him:

Just, WOW! In the first few pics I thought it had a piano black laq. finish on it. It looks amazing in that finish. Congrats. Will you post some audio/video when you get it?:hyper: Dann

Yeah, the finish is supposedly quite unique according to Jimmy. He says he's been hand rubbing it for hours to the point where his arm is sore. Its interesting how the finish looks remarkably different depending what light its in. At first I though it might be a bit too dark, but as you can see from the last few pics I posted, you can still easily see the wood grain. I dig it.

As to audio/video, I dont have a digital camera, but I may be able to get some audio at some point.
