I've seen a lot of Big covered humbuckers (EB mudbucker style especially) placed right at the end the neck.

Due to the cost of said pickups, I'm wondering about alternatives. Is there any reason you cant put a musicman or p bass style humbucker at the end of the fingerboard, in the "neck" position?

If any of you have done that, how did you like the result? Sound files?

    Thanks.

I don't have any current sound files, but big fat bass describes the tone.

Jack Casady had a Jazz bass with a Precision pickup right at the front for the first three Jefferson Airplane albums, but hasn't used one since he discovered hollowbody basses, so you might want to experiment on a cheap bass first.
