    What should I be using?

Passive Bass --> me50b --> active or passive DI?

(*I understand passive bass --> active DI.... but does a pedal in-between change things?)

I wouldn't use the ME50B at all, it sucks out too much punch, no matter in what setting. Get a used GT-6B it has amp and cab modeling and DI built in. 150-250 online.

I'm not looking for opinions on the me50b... (thanks, though!)

The question is whether to use an active or passive DI box when using an me50b with a passive bass.

Radial Engineering JDI will get you ANYWHERE. IMO but you don't seem to like my opinion too much^^

    So, passive.

Does not matter. Any preference will be just that, a preference. They both will do an acceptable job, as long as it's not a POS to begin with.
