You need to gently rock the car back and forth to get it out of the snow. Reverse, brake, drive, brake, reverse, brake, drive... Letting your tires spin faster and faster only makes it worse!!!!

    Dammit!

Sitting in my studio hearing person after person spin their wheels outside, trying to get out of their parking spots. This is why people hate the snow. The snow is our friend. And you're an idiot.

    That's all.

  2. It's not me- I know this and I'm a lifetime Norcallian who has maybe 3 times driving in white stuff

Actually, just get out, grab your aluminium shovel in the trunk, scrape a little get back in and drive away.

    That works too.

  7. My brother and I used to go out to pull out people who were stuck in snowstorms when we were younger. More often than not we were able to drive the cars out without pulling or digging. Most people really are bad drivers, and snow sure doesn't improve their abilities.

For most people 4wd will just get you stuck worse.

Something about the reduction of friction due to frozen precipitation events makes me want to stay well clear of all outside travel surfaces. I will admit that I find some modicum of humor in a 15-car pileup where the maximum speed involved was 15 miles per hour and included vehicles such as city busses and a fire truck.

    Peace,
    Greg

I just got back from a business trip on Austin. My cab driver told me it had snowed the week before and the call went out for all cabbies to get off the road. Many didn't and many of the 30 or so that ended up getting in accidents lost their jobs.

  13. Make sure you turn your traction control off too! If you don't in my wife's car, you can't get unstuck no matter how hard you try as it won't let you spin at all and you need to be able to spin a bit. Also, kitty litter.

HOW TO AVOID GETTING STUCK IN THE SNOW:

    1. Move south of the Mason Dixon line
    2. Never deal with snow > 3"
    3. Problem resolves itself

    :D :bag:

Ha! You assume that people have useful things in their trunks and even know what to do with them! I'd say 99% of people don't even have the common sense to carry a pocket knife - much less have a shovel in their car!

That being said, this is the only time of year I'm glad to live in the deep south. The two times I drove on snow, I waited for everyone else to melt ruts on the road (and ditch their cars doing so) before I went out. It still sucked.

But I'm pressing the "go" pedal, and the car isn't going. I will press it harder. Then the car will understand that I want it to go.

I need to figure out how to turn it off in my truck. It's really no fun having a truck and not being able to spin doughnuts.:spit:

  20. As evidenced by the massive shutdowns 2 weeks ago.....
