I have a 2011 Fender Deluxe 5 and i want to replace the pre. I was thinking one of these two brands. I had a sadowsky but curious about the j retro. I play a lot of funk, r&b, but need some flexibility and a killer j slap tone.

    Thoughts, experiences? Thx guys!

J Retro = 'Tone Monster' and perfect for what you're looking for! Also, very easy to install into Fender Jazz Bass. Just make certain shielding is not compromised upon replacement; that is if Fender shielded the bass in the first place. If the bass isn't properly shielded from the factory, this would be a good opportunity to insure it will be.
