    Hi all!

I'm happy with my Squier VM Mustang but I'm looking to add to the tonal pallet with another higher output bass (i play a blend of funk, soul and classic/stoner rock). i'd like to keep the price as low as possible while still keeping it limited to short scale basses.

the most tempting option out there is to get another PS mustang or MIJ reissue/vintage, then mod the squier and drop a mini hum or comparable pickup in there.

the reason this started was because a good friend of mine came over and played his jazz bass and the tone sounded fantastic with my p90's.

i'm also really tempted to get a bass vi, but will probably try to get a micro POG first since i'm in no rush.

It's crossed my mind, since they're pretty much the only short scale jazz bass around. The mediocre reviews due to questionable QC have me holding off.

    Thanks for the suggestions!

I just missed out on a gretsch 2202, which was brought on this post.

A used PS mustang would stretch the budget @ around $500 . I'm a guitarist and am looking for someone inexpensive options for new tone.

The rockbass looks great too! Is ebay the best place to find them? Currently only 2 @ $5700

If you can swing it the Gibson SG is super punchy and has good output. I have a worn finish one I bought new for $520.00

I have a Dearmond Jet star for sale in the classifieds-
bought it to tide me over while getting my vintage hagstrom re-fretted. Set neck, cool looks and plays extremely well.
Awesome with fuzz and effects. Works great with open/ drop tunings. It might float your boat on the cheap:

The Squier Jaguar SS is pretty punchy sounding. Inexpensive too!

True it is a punchy bass but only if you change out the bridge pickup. The p pickup is ok but the bridge pickup is garbage. The output is so low it is barely usable. And to make it punchy you need the bridge pickup and heavier gauge stainless strings. Just something to think about.
