Hey thought I'd make a club. I'll hand out numbers too! Anyone who aint afraid to dig in and change the look of their bass on the cheap! Here's my refinishes, all colors came from the shelf at wal mart.
My first attempt. Looks good, but didn't prime it well enough so it started chipping away. 2001 Affinity P bass.

This is the final version of that guitar. The paint is Satin Lime, so I had to clear coat it to make it glossy.

Next up my metallic red affinity J. This was a two can job, 1 can of white primer and one of Blue Ocean Breeze.

Lastly my first attempt at a sunburst. Went two tone just for sake of never had done it before. Looks ok. In the middle of refinishing it again. After a failed attempt at Fiesta Red I'm going olympic white with tort guard.

I took a stock SX bass and upgraded virtually everything on it, including a charcoal metallic/prism paint job, for a GTG raffle prize a few years ago.

Painted the headstock, even made a one-off logo, then sealed it all under a ridiculous amount of clearcoat.

The "prism" effect wasn't as obvious unless under very bright lighting (such as a flash). Wasn't perfect, but still a fun project that came out pretty well. The winner of the bass still has it, in fact.

That's a beautiful burst! It's amazing what one can do with rattle cans. Nice Job.

Most of my finishes are from spray cans.

Back in the day I used to do rattlecan refins all the time. What a great hobby. I did several guitars and basses for friends and sometimes bought a cheapie at a pawn shop, refinished it, and then flipped it for extra cash. I kinda miss doing these. And the pics here are great! Some amazing jobs!

One thing I never tried, though, and see some great examples of here, is a burst.

Can someone tell me how you go about doing a burst?

It's a matter of toning the wood right, then finding a transparent red, and spraying carefully around the edge, then black around that edge. It's a huge matter of patience.

  14. This one catches me by my chrome plated narglies:::

I did up a hideous looking MIM P Bass years ago with Rustoleum Black Textured paint years ago, and sprayed the PG with flat black - I wish I had some pics, 'cause it turned out really well...

Here's an action shot of my SX I refinished with some rattle can Rustoleum "poop" brown. Love the color. Excellent bass.

  20. This used to be white, with a black pickguard. Lots of work, but lots of fun too.
