Read My Lips: No New Gear For A Year

Discussion in 'Basses [BG]' started by jasonbraatz, Jan 6, 2014.

  1. My goal is to end 2014 with the exact same gear that I own today*. No additions, no churning, no flipping, no upgrading or downgrading. (I'm also applying this same strategy to my computer gear and vehicles.) I have everything I need, and everything I could realistically justify having.

I'm just going to focus on the stuff I have, take care of it, and make great music with it.

I think I can do it.

*Technically as of tomorrow, when my Valkyrie shows up.

My guitarist / Band Leader said that this time last year. By March he was showing me new pedals....then a new PRS.....then sold a different PRS....then bought a new drum set....then a new amp.....then another new amp...then an Epiphone Casino....then a 16 channel mixer.

    You wanna meet him?

  4. I made the same resolution. Told myself no browsing TB classifieds, eBay, Craigslist.
    Already browsing again.
Good luck. It's a worthy goal.

I said to myself too that I am pleased with all of my gear.

I will not purchase anything else in 2014 bass wise.

Wait, I have been eyeballing that burst American Special Jazz.

Oh he'll, there goes another New Years resolution down the friggen toilet.

I commend your goal! One of the definitions of a rich man is he who is satisfied with what he already has. Your Valkyrie should effectively quash any amp GAS, for sure. I am blessed to be quite satisfied with what I have at hand and to have no actual need for any gear changes.

I don't NEED a thing. That doesn't mean anything but maybe this year will be the year.

  9. I didn't get anything new in 2013 besides an EBow and music books I don't think.

    It really isn't hard.

  10. I couldn't say that for this year, but I have been downsizing for the last couple years. I can say the last couple years downsizing has been nice. I look back at the days of having to make 4 trips into the club just to load in my own bass gear and wonder why I did it for so long. these days its a one trip load in for me unless I want to bring additional basses which is very rare for me.

    my 2014 shopping list
    needs
    1) high power class d power amp to cut my racks weight by 20lbs
    wants
    1)8 string bass 4x2
    2) replace my 4 string fretless with 5 or 6 fretless
    3) used Triton rack plus Roland pk5

9 days into the new year, and I've already bought two new basses. Resolution's out the door.

I'm getting a bass from TB'er next week. I really want a Goldtone Microbass, another five, and an amp upgrade, so this won't be a gear free year for me.

I commend your goal too. While I can't say that I will try to follow you, this year will be minimal in bass purchases. I have a great amp set up, and several great basses. I couldn't really ask for more.

    I might though.

One of my year goals is to extract capital from my gear investments and put it into other things, like caring for my family, heat, etc. I'm in a lucky and incredibly fortunate situation to not have to be forced into this decision at this time, so I'm treating it as kind of a test of my mettle. Man, even the IDEA of it is hard. This is a tough game.

I respectfully reject political correctness, thank you.
Same goal here. And hey, I made it for a solid seven days!

I've since refined my goal to: "No new gear on Sundays".

    I said this last year.

I held myself to it all the way through October...

The flurry of gear changes that happened in November and December totally erased that thought.

    Good luck! :D

I said the same thing to myself in 2013. In fact, I went from May 2012 through December 2013 without buying a single thing outside of strings, picks and stuff to make cables. You know what? I stuck with it, even while browsing eBay, Craigslist, TB etc. It's just a matter of discipline and not have solutions looking for problems. I can't say the same thing for 2014 as I would have already broken it, but I know March through December I won't be buying more gear. 2015, I'll likely be buying a "real" upright bass, so who knows what else that will spin off.

I have not purchased any bass items since Spring of 2012 when I bought my Monique preamp. I really don't have anything I want.

*I do buy other 'music' items from time to time for use in the band. In the past year, they've included:

-A stockpile of BASF LGR-50 broadcast tape for making Space Echo loops.

-Lights: 2x PAR 36 LED and 1 used PAR 64 LED stage lights for live use in smaller venues.

-Speaker stands for PA use in smaller venues.

-a cheap micro reverb and micro analogy delay for use by the band as needed for additional 'dub' effects.

I would like to pick up another cheap/light power amp mostly for 'in case of' PA usage and a little compact 16 channel board.

No basses. No amps. No preamps. No bass toys.

I'm already screwed for this year. Have a new head on its way and will have a new US and a new Euro Spector within the next couple months. Maybe next year!
