    Hi All,

I'm thinking about acquiring a Rickenbacker Laredo specifically to modify to an 8 string bass. I have a schaller 8 string bridge and wonder if the neck width of the Laredo is wide enough as well as the pickups. The schaller's E-G spacing is 2 5/8" (see photo). Any input would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks!

Well,it has been done, and Dane Wilder is the guy to ask. I would love to own an 8-string 4004,myself.
I'm pretty sure he used the Schaller 8-string bridge, too.

Rickenbacker pickups are designed for a 2 1/8" string spacing. The older 4004 basses have a wide enough neck. The newer ones probably not. Get a pre 2008 4004 and modify or replace the bridge pickup and it will work.

The strings will be close to the edge of the neck even on an older 4004.

Seeing these pics of 8 strings is really making me wish I never sold my 4008 years ago..I really miss that bass..it's truly my only regret as far as basses I've owned in the past.

Yeah, Those are soooooo rare to find. That's why i'm making my own. I just don't care for any of the manufacturer offerings out there, and beautiful high quality multistring basses just arent out there.
