Please post here if you have had any issues with orders from SGD pickups. A large number of folks have contacted me privately regarding long-term orders and very poor customer relations/support - if you also have experienced this, please post it here.

The purpose of this thread is to allow folks to share their experiences and perhaps work together to pursue some kind of relief.

Anything outside the bounds of this mandate may be considered trolling and will be dealt with appropriately.

Shouldn't the list from the previous threads be included here? A few weeks ago, SGD promised to work his way through it at a pace of 5 or more back orders per week. In fairness to him, I don't see how he can update it after a couple thread closures. The number of orders on the list is informative, as is any progress being made in getting caught up.

My order took about nine months. A standard "Wide" Sidewinder in EMG35 size, meant for the neck position and a "Wide" Neo sidewinder in EMG35 size, meant for the bridge position.

I recieved exactly what I ordered. The pickups look great, as good as anything from Dimarzio or EMG.

The standard Sidewinder sounds just like the samples on the site. Although it is a bit lower output, than I was expecting. The site does state however, that they are moderate output.

The neo Sidewinder is noticeably higher output. It also sounds very good and very different from the standard. More low mid presence, with highs that are a touch more modern. Slightly less "open" sound, overall.

SGD's customer relations and communication with me was quite good, overall. Before I ordered, I communicated with him a lot, through Private Messaging by way of Talkbass.

At the time, there was no way to order a neo sidewinder via SGD's site. So I ordered two sidewinders and then asked him to make note of the fact that I wanted one of them to be Neo. Which he did. I also went back and forth a couple of times with whether or not I actually wanted two Neos, or one of each. He humored me throughout the process and gave me the necessary info to make a final decision.

Right about when I should have been expecting my order, I sent him a message, wondering about ETA. He was very forthright with me and told me about troubles in his life that would cause relatively significant delay. Shortly after, SGD announced via the forum, the troubles in his life that would cause the initial delays. Rather than send a bunch of similar messages, individually. I offered my sympathies via PM. I can't and won't try to quote what was said, but he was pretty honest and I was happy with the response.

Waiting a few extra months for the order was of course, not preferable. But the way SGD handled me specifically, as a customer, was always good. He was always polite to me and gave me info and responses that made me feel like he was paying attention to me. Not just answering the 43rd PM for the day.

Eventually, I recieved my pickups and posted an initial review of them, as well as similar comments about the service. If and when the order queue is sorted, I intend to order more Sidewinders.

Lets keep this thread clean and to the point as specified by John Turner. Post if you have a backlogged order with SGD. If not, don't post here.

Everyone is responsible for keeping the list of backlogged orders updated. Make sure to mark your order as delivered if you receive it. Hope this will be a short thread!

I think this really points to the anger many have toward SGD. Aside from the length of time in actually filling an order, there have been far too many reports of unfulfilled "going to be shipping in a week" promises to number. How are you supposed to deal with that? Just hope they show up, out of the blue, in a year or 3?
Part of my frustration, is that I paid with PayPal, and was given an expected delivery window of 12 - 18 weeks. Paypal views a transaction as occurring on the date that money changes hands. So I was well beyond filing a straightforward claim with them. Now, if I had filed a claim after 18 weeks and a day, I MIGHT have been able to successfully file for a refund. But any additional patience for delivery definitely sinks your chances of recovering your money.

I contacted dave in early, september and gave him the date that my new new bass would be done and if he would be able to complete the pickups by then.he said it would be no problem.was told numerous time "theyll be shipping monday".then no response for months while my new bass sat with no pups.i ended up filing a complaint with my bank, got my money back in a few days and ordered a set of nordys which were here in a few days and sound great.i would not have gotten my money back if it were not for info from the previous thread regarding the laws involved .id like to thank all of you for the info.these threads helped a unsatisfied customer get his money back.keep it on the low end folks

Here's (most of) my email dialogue with David. Every single response to my inquiries was a falsehood and (in my humble opinion) represents fraud and misleading communication with customers who paid good money. How are we not supposed to be angry about this? What recourse is left for the many people still left on this list who have received nothing? I'm sure this thread will be closed down, just like all the others, but I just want all of the others on the list who were promised that their merchandise would be shipped "this week" or this day or that one, that they are not alone.

(Most recent is at the top. That's also the last time I heard from him.)

"You will get your pickups as a bunch of other people did this past week.

It's a pretty expensive lesson to learn but it has taught me to check the forums before I buy something again. Thanks for that, I guess.

I'll admit that I was the idiot for giving you money up front but that doesn't change basic right and wrong. None of us (the hundreds of people that still cling to some kind of misguided hope that they'll actually receive what they (tried to) purchased from you) actually think that pursuing legal action will do any good. (Declaring bankruptcy is the new "respectable".) I've looked at the threads and nobody has received their pickups. I get it. Actually, I don't get it, and I still don't understand why you're doing this. Here's how you can make this right with me: Just give me my money back. That's it, it's as simple as that. You have no intention of fulfilling my order and if I had known of the existence of the many threads dedicated to your spot-on business practices, I'd have never gotten myself into this in the first place. Just give me my money back, how hard is that?

this is intended to be a centralized repo of information (such as the number of folks affected, and the approx. amount of money involved) for those who have been subjected to SGD's less than savory business practices. folks participating with nothing constructive to add along those lines may find themselves penalized.

    its not rocket science.

I was able to take my name off the list in mid November and most definitely had to pester David almost every month for a year to get my pickups, but with that said... I got my humbuckers installed in my Les Paul bass and they are amazing! My bass that has been un-played for years just jumped to the top of my list in terms of tone. I am not saying it was 100% worth the wait, but I have to admit the bass sounds great! Just my two cents and I will now politely remove myself from this threat in order to keep it available for those who still have open orders with David. hang in there peeps!!!

In July 2013 I fried the active preamp in my bass (Schecter Stargazer). I did some research (esp on TalkBass) and became aware of David, aka: SGD Lutherie. The impression I received was that his product was exceptional but there might be quite a wait for custom orders. I contacted David via email and as pointed out in the threads at the time, his response was quick and informative. He indicated that all I needed was to replace the preamp but suggested that I upgrade my current EMG pups with his pups. I obliged and committed to the following setup: Nd3 SJ4, M4 set, SGD 2-band Preamp, Bourns Blend pot and a wiring charge. I was told by David that I should expect delivery within 2 weeks. In all on 7/29/13 I paid, via paypal, $344.00 including shipping. A few weeks later after not receiving my order I emailed David and as the story goes he kept assuring me, 2 more weeks, personal issues, etc. I am sympathetic to this and my responses were all amicable. However, in October all my emails to David went unanswered. This was about the time I did some research on TB and discovered I was not the only neglected customer. A couple weeks later, though, David did contact me and again assured me that he was working on my order and would be shipping it out within a couple of weeks. I then noticed a flurry of posts on TB by David defending his business practices and eventually announcing his partnership with Best Bass Gear. I sent him another amicable email and on 11/30/13 he responded indicating, "I have the preamp done, and will be getting to the pickups probably this week. Truly sorry for the delay!" Subsequent emails to David have since gone unanswered.

I originally contemplated joining the previous threads in voicing my dissatisfaction, but I am not one to air my dirty laundry on the internet. I am contributing to this thread for two reasons: 1.) to illustrate that regardless of my amicable communication with David, he has neglected my order just as he has ignored those of you who have not been so amicable. 2.) to add to the growing list of those who have not received their orders with hopes that this issue will somehow get resolved.

On another note, I have now given up hope that I will ever receive my order and am going to "bite the bullet" and pay a local repair shop to fix my bass. Sucks for me but this bass is my primary instrument, not a project I'm working on that can just sit on the back burner. My frustration with David is that I made this clear to him and he still has not come through or even offered a resolution other than he would have my order shipped in "two more weeks...sorry for the delay."

Welcome to the club. I can't speak for anyone other than myself, but I suspect all early correspondence was amicable. I know that I didn't place an order just to have something to be grumpy about. And as much as I have written this off (because I can afford to), I don't want to see people with tighter resources than me to ever be in this position. Because even though I can afford to write off this nonsense, it doesn't mean it doesn't make me bristle.

I was not only very amicable but also very supportive here and through many emails. I kept that up for the first 19 months even as he broke several promises during that time. I even made a second order after 18 months mainly to support him. It was not until David wrote a stress induced email to me that was far from amicable that I raised any critique of his service.

This has nothing at all to do with how his customers treat him. It has everything to do with how he treats his customers. Even the worst a-hole of a customer has a right to get what s/he has paid for. That said, being an a-hole is obviously not the way to go.

It's now been a month since David said he would do one batch and then start with the orders on the top of the list. He has also said he sends out pickups every week. There needs to be some sign of him honoring his last promise very soon.

Next month my first order turns two years old.

If you used a credit card to fund your SGD Paypal transaction, you might be able to initiate a chargeback through your credit card company, even though it is past Paypal's 45-day 180-day (expanded as of 11.18.14) dispute filing time limit. Credit card policies typically offer expanded consumer protection beyond Paypal's 180-day policy .

Also, even if you filed a Paypal dispute, and it is closed by Paypal "decided not in your favor," you can still file a chargeback through your credit card company. Paypal disputes are far from the final word. Credit card companies overrule Paypal's "decided" disputes on a regular basis. Your credit card company trumps Paypal.

Call your credit card company, and let them know that your SGD order was processed, but items were never delivered. Ask your credit card company for a chargeback (for example, VISA has reason code 30: services not provided / merchandise not received).

You may have an extended refund time limit, say up to 12 mos, or possibly more depending on your credit card policy. Supply your email correspondence with SGD as possible transaction date extensions.

A successful credit card chargeback will go against PayPal, and they will have to fight it with your credit card company. However, for items not delivered, Paypal will likely immediately allow the chargeback to proceed.

In the event of a credit card chargeback, your credit card account will be temporarily credited while their investigation occurs. The credit will be made permanent if your credit card company finds on your behalf. In this scenario, SGD will receive the chargeback, as well as an additional chargeback penalty charge from the credit card carrier, passed on by Paypal.

None of this info is cast in stone, and this is not legal advice. Credit card companies have varying chargeback policies, depending on their customer-service and customer-protection models. You will have to call your credit card company to find your level of protection beyond Paypal.

This info only applies to those that used their credit card to fund their Paypal transaction. It does not apply to transactions where the Paypal payment was linked directly to your bank account.

Please report your experience here if you attempt a chargeback through your credit card company. Good luck!

In accordance with Mr. Turner's direction, I will keep this brief and on-point. I have an SGD order from July, 2013. It's on the master list above. I email David regularly about status, and always hear "I'm just getting to it." or "I'm doing a bunch just like yours next," etc. (My order is standard, not exotic.) I paid via Paypal with no credit card attached. I want the pickups for a Gibson Midtown, which is (in my opinion) not gig-worthy without the upgrade. So, I'm debating whether to write these off and order pickups from another source or continue to wait for David. The small flurry of fulfilled orders indicated in the list above gave me some hope, but it's fading fast.

John, you mention "working together to pursue some kind of relief." Any ideas on what that would look like? If there's a way we can work together to get our goods or else get our money back, I am all in.
