Very nice! How does it differ from the CTP?

    Edwin,

The CTP (SMS Classic Tube Preamp) has the same general gain/tone circuit as a blackface Bassman, Twin, Showman, etc. using a pair of 12AX7's.

The new V8 uses a pair of "octal" 6SL7 tubes, and a simpler two-knob EQ. The voicing is quite similar to the CTP, but with a bit more mid presence to help enhance the special octal tube harmonic qualities. The circuit topology is a bit different too and there is more clean headroom in the V8 as well. Both preamps are in the same camp though when it comes to the general voicing of the EQ shape. The major difference is in how the tube characteristics are enhanced. The octal tubes are different animals. Their huge plate structures seem to have this quality of magnifying subtlety and nuance, revealing low-level detail. It almost has the effect of compression in how clearly heard the softer sounds are, but in reality the circuit is extremely linear, not compressed. The octals are also VERY big and full sounding and punchy feeling to play thru.

    Brad
