I've been listening to this style of music and really enjoy it. Besides listening, are there any playing suggestions?

IMHO a big part of getting the sound is the mind frame, achieved by playing long hours non-stop along druming/percusion...

if you can find some drummer/percusionist(s) to jam with, do it! and the longer, the better... playing for 4 or 5 hours straight really teaches you about groove and movement economics!

but that might be just me...
