Squier Deluxe J bass - slap switch or suck switch?

    I've been playing around with one of these at the local music store and I'm very close to pulling the trigger on one (I wish I could out flats on it first, but oh well). The problem is that unless I have the slap switch on, the EQ on flat sounds REALLY anemic. Kind of treble heavy, not much presence, and really bland. Flipping the switch gives a much more modern sound, but at least it has character. I'm looking for something that can cop a modern tone as well as a mellow vintage jazz tone.

    Could it be that the battery is low on the bass? I would think that if that were the case it would sound bad no matter what. I keep hearing such good things about this bass and I want to like it, but I wanted to see what's up with the tone. Any ideas?
