Stupid things your bandmates have said.

Discussion in 'Bass Humor & Gig Stories [BG]' started by oniman7, Apr 10, 2011.

  1. The title of this was going to be "Stupid things your guitarists have said" but I didn't want to be biased.

I started this thread because I got done with a 2 hour argument with my guitarist at practice today. It basically consisted of
"No guys, we HAVE to add more chords! I can't solo over an F Chord the whole time!" When I tried to argue he said "Bass players don't know anything about the melody or have to worry about it, that's why it sounds fine to you."

Also "You're just a bass player, so you can just sit on a chord and play arpeggios and it sounds fine to you and you'll be happy"

  2. "Why don't you just buy a Fender P bass and an Ampeg and call it a day, instead of all of that fancy stuff?" :scowl:

For the record, the guitarist referenced is slowly working his way out.

Me, "I am. I think you mean whole notes".
Drummer, "NOOO, I mean 3/4 timing. Like (motions note) 1-2-3- (motions note)1-2-3"!

Did an out of state cover gig. Were supposed to get $400. The bar was empty. Maybe 5 people. At payment time owner says, "How bout we do a little better than what we agreed upon?" Guitarist says, and is 100% serious... "Sure! What are ya thinking... like maybe $500?".

  11. Our rhythm player writes most of our songs. He works pretty hard on them. We had an incredible lead player, but for some reason he couldn't come up with anything for this particular song. the lead players comment to the rhythm player was
"Maybe...that's one of those songs you play by yourself at home"

    Guitar player 1:

guitar player: this song needs a bit more of a heavy metal vibe... you know, like the Sex Pistols...
    me: ehrrr, Sex Pistols... punk?
guitar player: No, they're really a metalband. I once saw a documentary where they were shown to be one of the first heavy metalbands...
    drummer: LOL

    Guitar player 1:

guitar player: Oh noooooo, my gear doesn't work. I plugged in everything and it just doesn't work. noooo, I paid so much for this mexican fender.

*Grabs screwdrivers etc and starts disassembling his fender*

*drummer waits 3-4 minutes and then he tells what is on all of our minds*

drummer: dude, plug your amp in and get on with the rehearsal.

    Guitarplayer 2: live

*Played keyboard for a bit, and grabs guitar to do a lead lick. Does his lead lick*

    afterwards
    guitar player 2: Stupid PA-guy. I couldn't hear myself!
drummer: *sighs* Man, you forgot to plug your guitar in your amp... *walks away*

And now our drummer (bandleader) recruited a third guitar player :'(

My guitarist from my last band used to say that too.

Of course, he was also the same guy who always chasing the tone of a "Vintage Mah-shall" , but never actually just went out and got one.

This was not stupid but a guitarist insisted that 3/4 time (waltz) was the same as 6/8. I assured him we were not reducing fractions and gave a quick inservice on time signatures. Any time you see or hear something bizarre, just remember your dealing with one (or multiple!) deficits:

    *Knowledge deficit

    *Skill deficit

    *Compliance deficit

    *Equipment deficit

At some point in time, you will be called upon to step forth and become an educator. Do so with the same grace and patience that others have demonstrated towards you.

  21. My favorite, Drummer after the gig as I tell him we should never play a particular Original song again, since it emptied the dance floor in probably record time. "It's not our responsibility to make them dance"

I left the band shortly after that.
