Whenever I see someone using this term it makes me think how insecure some bass players must be. Joking about Mental Retardation and in that fashion is extremely low class.

Not to defend the term "guitard", but who is connecting it to Down Syndrome? There are a lot of causes of intellectual development disabilities that were once called "mental retardation".

From what I understand in this ever-changing, PC-driven world we live in, referring to anybody with mental health issues as [REDACTED] is in poor taste. Very poor taste, indeed.

Referring to guitarists as [REDACTED] is just plain ol fun. If they didn't exist, drummers would step up to the place behind lead singers, and lead singers would be the new [REDACTED]. It's called a pecking order.

The word "******" is not good. The word "guitard" is not only appropriate, but highly accurate.

As somebody who is primarily a guitarist (despite my username, I was 14 at the time) I never took it as offensive.

What does Down's Syndrome have to do with it, why singled out?

Why is the term "guitard" an attack at those with Down's Syndrome?

I asked why it was singled out, Down's Syndrome is not the only condition to present a degree of mental retardation, and if I want to be pedantic (which I do) mental retardation is not the sole application of the word ******.

Referring to System Of A Down as "Syndrome Of A Down" is specifically referring to Down's Syndrome. Saying a pretentious starving artist type has "artism" is specifically referring to autism.

    Guitard isn't so specific.

I don't say it, though. I don't play in bands with the egomaniac types, so I never have complaints about my "guitard".

I've never liked the term, and don't use it. But I'm not claiming the high ground here - I've used plenty of other derogatory terms regarding some people...

All I can say is that if you can dish it out than you'd better be able to take it. Good friends should be able to rib each other but when a stranger shoots his mouth off than it's different story. Deep down my band mates love and respect each other but we say stuff that seem offensive to "outsiders". So I wouldn't call someone a guitard in front of a mentally challenged person. Like a Drummer for example:)

You'd have to be retarded to think guitard is offensive.

    I kid I kid.

What I meant to say is you'd have to have down syndrome to think guitard is offensive.
