Here is my beast that's a ah350smx it's older but has the input blend the 2 preshapes a 12 band the dual band compressions and the tone sweep, which is awesome on the fly. Two effects loops from and rear. The only thing I don't love about it the standby switch doesn't work and makes a noise when I turn it off. But man the sound and power this guy has with these cabs is just amazing

    Very nice!
I see you're selling your 1048H on CL....

Do you notice any speaker crackling or buzzing at very low volume like 1-2 on the master.

Your mute switch might just need some cleaner/lube or maybe a new switch. It sounds like it getting worn out.
What makes the noise, the mute switch or the mains switch?

Cool! Maybe you could do a video review and comparison to two 1048H cabs or the popular 1048/1518 stack.
I'd be interested in hearing your take on it.

    From Part 3...

Distorted sound not much volume on my AH400SMX :(

Started out with just a loud pop and loud hum and no sound (music)... :spit:
I took it out of the case, took the top cover off, canned air blew the dust and cobwebs (literally) out of it.
It literally looked like it had been stored at the Munster's mansion for 100 years inside.

Ran a 1/4" plug several times in /out of each 1/4" jack.
now, No more loud pop and hum but, only low volume of distorted music. I mean like 2 watts of sound at 5 on the output level (master).

I piped it into my AH1200SM via the effects loops and only slight buzz from the 1200's black-light and the 400's input gain affects the volume but, I get plenty of good loud bass type sound from the amp. like 500 watts of good loud clean bass

    like this:
Bass to AH400SMX, Set input gain to optimal signal,
    AH40SMX effects "send" to
    AH1200SM effects "return"
    Speaker connected to AH1200SM

    This config sounds GREAT.

The AH400SMX on it's own sounds like listening to a set of headphones laying on top of the amp head playing a bass with a nice warm overdrive pedal. :rollno:

Is it maybe the 12ax7 tube going out and if so, why does it not sound better when the input blend is all the way to the SS side?

Sounds like the power stage of the 400 is stuffed.

No noise on low volume just a popping sound when I power down. Was told by someone that it is a common noise when the stand by switches go out.

Yes, That is common and that's why the mute switch is there. If the switch is dirty or worn out and doesn't function then you will get the pop from killing the power.

It's PC Board mounted but, if you are good with a soldering iron... you could fix it DIY

I'm thinking maybe that since I air dusted the inside and sound improvement was had that an actual cleaning - take stuff out and clean ALL the dust film off the boards might yield
more improvement. Since I went from all AC hum to no AC hum and some bass guitar sound that a real cleaning might save me a service at BAS. IF NOT then I'll send it in.
But, I'll check some values on the voltage regulator and change out the pre tube to be sure first.

Dust on the board shouldn't matter. Cleaning moving parts will help (pots, sliders, etc.) and re-seating the tube (cleaning out the tube socket) but for the rest of the SS stuff it's just sitting there, albiet under dust.

FWIW, in a previous job I worked for a construction materials company and would go to sand plants and rock mines to fix their PC's. I added memory to one that had so much dust on the motherboard you could have planted a garden in it.

As DownUnder said, it sounds like your preamp section works, just the power amp section is flaky. On my old combo, it cut out on me occasionally - I pulled out the power section and re-soldered the fets to the board - touched up what I could, then put it back in. Never had a problem since. If you are handy with an iron that's what I'd do and then go from there; if no luck then a trip to BAS is in order.

Cool. I'm pretty good with an iron. I'll reseat plugs too.

Can anyone provide some thoughts on the above? Got a lead on a 122H combo I really want to secure. Does the front panel illuminate (no BL, electroluminescent) and how does the tube sound when you overdrive it?

Just curious, I'm sold either way though. Hopefully amp GAS will be cured...

Only the peavey era models have fiber optic backlighting and no black light offering.

    The GP7 & GP12 combos don't have a black light.

Most of the black light offerings are head amp only and start at the AH300SM/X models along with the X and VA SERIES. As far as I recall.

I have the same combo amp as the top of that stack and have been thinking about a 1 X 15 extension cab. The 2 X 10 combo is nice and punchy and well-articulated, but... lacking in bottom, perhaps?

Personally, I think that the 2x10 cab makes for a great extension to the 1210 combo. If you look at the chart which compares the frequency response of the combo to that of the 2x10 cab, you can see that the cab is voiced a bit deeper.

    Trace review from BGM#10

Of course, many other players have had great results pairing the 1210 with a 1x15, so I'm not saying stay away from the 1x15. I'm just saying that the 2x10 does go deeper than the combo.

    As always, YMMV.
