I'm going to be playing electric with a concert percussion ensemble. Any ideas on how I can get a sound similar to the guy's solo on this recording: http://www.tapspace.com/percussion-ensemble/until-morning-sings/

Specifically, I'm asking about Mvt. 2 at 0:45.

I'm currently playing a Fender jazz with a $300 Acoustic brand amp from Guitar Center. No other effects currently at my disposal, but I would be willing to buy whatever, within reason. I'm well overdue for some upgrades to my setup.

    Thanks!

i'd start by getting a fretless bass.

Yes. Getting a new instrument is not an option at the moment, however.

IMO, it would be practically impossible to even get close to that tone without one.
