It looks cool and is easier than playing guitar.

It satisfies my need for sonic domination.

    Firstly, why not?

Second, to me, it's a feeling of control (probably why so many bassists are audio engineers, too). We hold up and support the music being played. What does music sound like with no bass, except as a dynamic moment to do without it? And in that moment, a tacit moment for the bass is a defining role in that dynamic.

I probably worded that badly, but nonetheless, there's a control factor involved in a good bass part. And I'd like to think that I'm not a control freak, but heyyy...

And thirdly, I love love love playing bass.

  7. Billy Gould's tone and style on early FNM records. That's it.

  8. Playing bass seems to fit my personality... I was never much of a "look at me" kinda guy.

Because ever since I first found rock music, I've always been attracted to the bottom end. I have no idea why, I just roll with it!

  10. This is easy.....

I started wanting to play guitar, and am surrounded by SO many tremendous guitar players in this area. I struggled to attain at least a not suck level of playing but it isn't where my natural ability is at. I stumbled into playing bass for a friend early on, and he felt I was a natural at it, feel - meter, etc.....so I put a little effort into it and it was a solid fit for me. I am comfortable with it, understand my place (most of the time anyway) and reached a don't suck level pretty well.

That said - I enjoy it and still play some guitar.

I backed my way into it. I was a guitarist for years. Someone asked me to take up bass so I could be in their band. So I did. I've stuck with it and gotten better because I really love it now.

I play it because it's just like building a house: designing and constructing the foundation of a house requires a more thorough understanding of construction than just doing the framing and finish work. It makes the rest of the structure possible.

    Plus, it's fun.

As a kid I found myself gravitating to music that had a great groove, but back then I thought I just had weird taste in music because I was all over the place with musical likes. Then when I hit high school I realized that all of the great grooves I enjoyed was because they had great bass lines, and rhythm. I felt bass was the driving force behind my musical interest.

    ENTWISTLE!!!

I don't know if that really makes sense. I didn't learn trumpet or French horn.

  21. started out playing some guitar at 14 but all the bands at school needed bass players. Picked up a bass and haven't looked back since.
