Would you sacrifice 10 anonymous people in order to save the one most important person in your life? What about 20? 100? 300,000? 1,000,000,000? What's your number. And remember that each person you sacrifice has a family member(s) who will miss them just as much as you would miss the most important person in your life.

This question is too hard for me to answer so i'm going to pass. What about you guys?

I would toast a country without blinking to save my kids.

Well, there's a biking lane on the road I take to work that for some reason, none of them want to use, can I do the sacrificing myself?

The answer is, No. Anything else is pure selfishness.

The answer is yes. Selfishness is underrated.

What about a one for one trade - important person in your life for anonymous person. Is this still selfish?

Everything we do in life is selfish. And that's ok.

I could easily replace 10 anonymous people with the one most important person in my life.

I remember being a kid and having the teacher introduce the concept of altruism.

    Whiskey Tango Foxtrot?

That's a more reasonable question. Anyone who says yes to the original question is a psychopath.

In a 1 for 1 trade I'd have to know more details of the situation. The most important person in my life is only 8 years old. If the other person is anonymous there's a pretty good chance they are much older than 8.

Also, who's doing the asking? Is it an evil-mastermind with a gun to my head or are we stuck on sinking ship and there's only room for so many people on the lifeboat?

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot indeed. Sorry teach, altruism is a lie. Deal with it.

Well, no. A psychopath has no feelings for anyone besides themselves. I'd say anyone who says yes to the original q is a normal, well adjusted human being. Unless you're delusional.

This is like the red button green button game.
Press the red button as many times as you want. You'll get ten million dollars every time, and somewhere in your country someone dies. Could even be you. Could be your family.

Press the green button, you get some good karma and dreams of millions.

    What do you do?

Ignore the whole scenario, and go on with my life. Problem solved.

Then that's exactly what a psychopath would do. Saving the one person you care about personally is a selfish thing that you would be doing for yourself, overlooking the families and friends of the other ten.

If you were a psycopath, you wouldn't care about even one other person. Just yourself.

But if you want to keep telling yourself that you would choose the life of ten (or even a hundred) strangers over the life of Your significant other, child, best friend or parent, then be my guest. Not sure if I believe you though.
