Piezoelectricity results when variable pressure/vibration is applied to a crystalline substance and that can be utilized in a pickup configuration generically referred to as piezo's. Typically the tone produced is a thin, hollow, high frequency, acoustic-like tone but a quality piezo circuit can produce a 20Hz - 20kHz response.
