[edit] Definition
The standard definition of slap bass or slap usually refers to the tecnique in which the string is played by being struck with the side of the thumb and also plucked, usually a combination of the two techniques.
[edit] Technique
Slapping
The thumb acts very much like the hammers of a piano or drumstick. The hand is used by swivelling it as if opening a doorknob, with the thumb at a 90 degree angle to the hand. The hand must be kept fairly relaxed for this. The idea of this is to strike the string and allow it to bounce off, creating the slap noise.
With practice and experimentation the angle of the thumb will vary between people, and the position of the thumb where it hits the string will also be a matter of personal preference.
Plucking
Plucking is achieved by using the index or middle finger to 'hook' the string and gently pull it upwards and releasing it. This creates the plucked note. This can also be called popping.
The combination of slapping and plucking is usually a personal choice of the bassist playing but the general consensus is that lower notes are slapped whilst higher ones are plucked. Also, it may be seen as easier to access the strings if the E and A strings with the thumb, slapping these, and the further away strings are plucked with the two longest fingers of the hand, the middle and index finger.
