****SOLD****
1968 Gibson EB-3. Walnut. Serial number 847833.
$1,500
Yeah, I know this is not exactly the forum for Gibby's but I figured I'd put it out there anyway.
All original except I have installed a Hipshot bridge, shaved on the sides to fit under the original bridge cover, which makes a marked improvement in tone and eliminates the problem of the string windings coming up over the two point bridge. Looks cool too. Included with the bass is the orginal bridge and the original adjustable damper, complete with the felt insert, if you want to return to factory setup. Chrome is very good to excellent. The finish is evenly checked. The prior owner must have been a “low slinger” as there is no buckle rash on the back but there are scratches in the finish on the upper bout edges and a thumbnail wear-through above the neck pickup. Various road dings on the body here and there, some thumb-wear of the finish above the 3rd fret and the holly logo on the headstock is lifting slightly but there are no breaks or repairs anywhere.
The bass has been completely gone over, cleaned and set up by Mouradian Guitar Repair of Boston/Arlington just a couple of months ago. Neck is straight and very fast I think because the finish is worn in ( not worn out or worn through), intonation is set, action is low and smooth, machines are tight. Frets are all freshly dressed and in good shape. Electronics are original (no new solder detected by Mouradian and the pots match), have been cleaned and lubricated by Mouradian and work perfectly without any scratching and the varitone is in perfect working order. New round wound strings were also installed.
The serial number dates it as 1968 according to the Gibson code charts. The pots are date coded 1969 ( code 1376929 which is possibly 29th week of 1969) but as you probably know, the slot headed EB-3’s began production sometime in 1969 so this is probably very late 1968 wood that was held in production until a new shipment of pots came in-must be one of the last of the series.
It comes with a era Gibson hard case with purple plush lining and the Gibson logo imprinted on it, and though close, it is not the original case and not made specifically for the EB-3 ( I think it may be for a Les Paul bass of the era-possibly early 70's). The case hardware is all in working order except for one loose, but working and repairable, clip. It also comes with a period Gibson hang-tag booklet.
In summary, although the finish is not in perfect condition, this is otherwise an outstanding EB-3 that plays as well as any I have played. I own 3, and this is the best player of the bunch. I just don’t need 3 of them. If you want an EB-3 to play as well as add to your vintage collection, this is the one. Why pay this kind of money for a reissue when you can have the real thing!
