Details

Here’s a great sounding, playing, and looking fretless to add to your collection. It’s a 50th Anniversary (1996) MIJ Fender Fretless 4-string Jazz (Serial #V013848) in creamy Olympic white. The original white pickguard has been upgraded to a beautiful custom mahogany-stained wood guard. From a distance, the look is similar to tortoise, but closer up the grain of the wood shows through – looks great!

Fretboard is unlined rosewood with very little wear. Neck is straight and the bass plays very well. Recently set up by Guitar Works of Evanston, Illinois, who also strung it with a new set of D’Addario XL lights. The original Japanese pickups have been upgraded to Bartolinis. There are a couple of good-size dings on the bass (I can get pics and locations if you’re interested), though overall I’d describe its condition as very good to excellent, and I would encourage you to look as closely as possible to the full size photos at the link posted below. No structural or electronic problems whatsoever.

This really is a gorgeous instrument – I get compliments every time I play it or post a pic on TalkBass/

PRICE NOW REDUCED TO $600, which includes insured shipping via UPS Ground anywhere in the lower 48. Payment by postal money order or cashier’s check. I can also take PayPal if you’re willing to cover the 3% fee. NO TRADES PLEASE!

Lots of good pictures of the bass available here:

are there dots on the top side of the neck? and if so are they where the frets are supposed to be or are they placed like a fretted neck?

There are dots at frets 3, 5, 7, 9, 12 (double), 15, 17, and 19. They are located "on" the fret points, not between frets as on a fretted bass.

I love that pickguard!!! Somebody buy this thing please! It needs to go to a good home!!! Where did you pickup that pickguard? and for the love of god please tell me it costs < $100

A couple of prospective buyers have asked me to elaborate on the condition of this bass and specifically on my comment regarding "a couple of good-sized dings" in my original post. Rather than sending out this info in individual PMs, I figured I'd just go ahead and add it to the thread.

Keep in mind that I rather like a somewhat used look in a bass -- a couple of the basses I have recently listed on TalkBass are Custom Shop relics and they're really nice. The fretless is certainly not in relic condition by any means, but it's not pristine either.

The nature of the finish on this bass is such that a good solid ding will translate into an indentation and a bit of finish cracking/crackling at the side of the ding, rather than finish actually chipping off.

1. From the front of the bass, the only really noticable ding is a roughly 1/4" square between the bridge pickup (left side) and the bottom of the pickguard, closer to the pickguard. No actual chipping of the paint there, but there is some cracking (of the finish).

2. There's a large spot (about 1/4" by 3/4" along the lower edge of the base, and on this on a bit of the finish has chipped off -- maybe 1/4" x 1/16" or so.

3. Right in the middle of the back is a scratch about 1" long. Again, slight indentation and finish cracking, beyond just a scratch in the finish.

Other than these, there are numerous very small dings, dents, and hair scratches on the bass. From any sort of distance the bass looks pretty much as good as new, but as you look at it up close, you'll see these little flaws. I would call these "character," but if you're looking for flawlessness, this isn't your bass.

You can see all 3 of the dings I've described (as well some of the little guys) if you go to the website I posted for pics, open pictures 004 and 003 (front) and 009 (back), click "View Full Size" below the picture, and then click on the little "expander" icon that will appear in the lower left corner of the picture. This will blow the picture up to a size large enough to spot the dings.

Ding #1 is most visible in photo 004 (it's slightly hidden by string shadow in 003). I didn't take any pics of the side of the bass, but you can see the paint chip in photo 003, as well as a couple of examples of what I've described as smaller dings along the left side of the bass in that photo. And in the back photo 009 you can see the scratch in the middle as well as more examples of small nicks and dings.

Hope that's helpful. Lot of detail here, but I figure better to waste time now giving folks as complete a picture as possible. Not trying to downplay the bass - I think it's a great-looking instrument. But I really believe in full disclosure so that nobody ends up disappointed.

So we're down to $550 shipped? I am getting very tempted. I love white jazz basses, and I need (well, want) a fretless.

Wow, that's a hot bass!
It looks like there's a screw missing on the E string tuner. Is the hole stripped, or are you just missing a screw?
