I'm curious as to whether sellers bother to check the Wanted: classifieds below before posting their gear for sale here? Please don't take it as a pointed comment or anything - just curious...
I usually do an Advanced search in the for sale and WTB forum before posting. Helpful for getting an idea about pricing, and its always an easier sale to someone who wants the gear
I always try to, but I don't post a lot of stuff, so it's easy for me to remember. I just recently had a good experience with someone who contacted me before listing his, because I had a WTB ad out for it.
I tend to check *wanted* about half as much as *FS*
That is to say, about 3-4X a day on average. I've moved a couple of items(as well as found a few)via the wanted section.
I usually put posts in the Wanted Section, however most of the responses usually are expecting 20% of higher more than what the stuff normally is selling for here (my stuff is better syndrome), or they're not really sure if they want to sell or not and expect you to 'hang out for a while' until they make up their mind.

I do. Without exception. But rarely is someone actively looking for what I'm selling. Or they're looking for it at a price far below the For Sale ad pricing. I've run several WTB ads and end up getting something about 10% of the time.
I also check existing for sale ads first. The main reason I do it is out of respect for fellow TB'ers that might be selling a similar item, especially if they are selling to for more than I would be asking. It sucks to have something for sale, then someone comes along and posts the same thing for just under what you're asking...
Honestly, I think the WTB forums should be done away with and rolled into the For Sale forums - I don't see any real reason to have both. It might make the For Sale forums a little easier to scan, but given the relatively low volume of posts in WTB, I think it does more harm than good.

From my point of view, it makes posting in WTB forums almost a waste of time due to their low traffic, and it adds unnecessary complexity to the process. Not trying to dog TalkBass - it's an awesome resource, but it seems that most people just don't bother looking in WTB, and I think it would be more efficient to roll it into the For Sale forum.
Maybe the better question is this: why continue to maintain two separate forums that serve the same basic purpose? Other than "because we always have", I don't know of a good answer.

I have personally had many people PM me when I posted something in the WTB Forum. The best thing about it is that if I need something and post over there...someone might have it and not have thought about it in awhile or not thought that someone would want to buy it.
If you don't think it is useful, it is easy...don't go there...but I have found several things over there. I think it is just as useful as the For Sale Forums.
I check the WTB section before I list something. Almost all the time. I have also alerted TBers in the WTB if something they are looking for is for sale here.
I checked when I sold the BAII bridge, 1 to see what they were going for, and 2, if I could contact someone direct about mine.
A great resource! I have also found things folks wanted that I have considered selling. That is a great motivator.
