This is a mid-60’s “no-name” bass, most likely a Teisco imported from Japan. It is the kind of bass that kids in the 60’s (like me) would stare at in drugstore and variety store windows in the city dreaming of the possibility of affording and playing it. They were also sold through department and discount stores in many varieties during the era. Very cool garage band vintage vibe. Great add to a collection and/or to whip out on stage and get shredding with the vintage look and tone.
This single pickup, full-scale (34") bass plays great and is LOUD. The nut is 1/3/4" and the bound fretboard neck is similar in dimension to a P-bass. The neck is straight, the finish is in very good condition, with a few nicks at the end of the lower bout and at the top of the headstock and some light overspray from some other project on the front of the headstock. The neck has an adjustable truss rod, the electronics work well with a wee bit of scratch in pots that can easily be cleaned and lubed out, it appears fully original and there are no visible repairs. The binding and nut have very nicely mellowed over 45 years to a nice vintage cream color. The chrome is in good shape, though there is some wear scratching on the chrome pick guard. There is a 1 inch square ding in back side of the neck just above the 14th fret, like the bass slipped and fell against an amp, but it is mostly in the finish and does not affect the playing.
In addition, it comes with its original custom-sized case. This is how I know it's a Teisco.Very few of these cases remain in existence because they were made of cheap chipboard and paper tolex coverings, so this is a rare offering. This one is a bit rough, but it is complete, including the original cheesy foam insert, and all the closures and hinges work. The plastic handle gave out, though, after I took the pictures.
This bass has been in my collection for about 10 years. Circumstances require that I thin the collection down some so that is why it is for sale.
$175 plus my cost for ground shipping.
