Hi everyone,

I have a 64 fender jazz bass, entirely original except for the fact that it has been refinished. The main problem is that the refinish is terrible. I don't know what kind of paint was used, but you can easilly scratch through to the wood with your thumbnail. The paint is very thin.

Anyhow, I been thinking about getting the bass refinished with a professional job. I'm willing to pay quite a bit for the work to be high quality. However, I have no idea where to pursue this idea. Will the fender custom shop do this kind of work? I couldn't find anything in the web. Anyhow, any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Definitely talk to Michael Dolan of Dolan guitars. I've had three basses refinished by him so far, and a couple more are on the way. He will do exactly what you want, is extremely knowledgeable about vintage finishes, the quality is outstanding, and his prices are very reasonable.

Here is a link to Dolan Guitars

He doesn't really get into his refinish info on the website, it's best to call him.

RS Guitarworks in Winchester, KY does some great refinishing
and aging that is amazingly good. They have a web site
that shows their work.
