For sale Zon Legacy Standard 5, fretless, green quilted maple!

Details

Hey,

So...this one kills me.

I bugged Brad Johnson for almost 10 years about this bass, telling him I'd buy it if he ever decided to sell. Eventually, earlier this year, he did. And excitedly I bought it!

And, as expected, it's incredible.

I used to play fretless almost 50/50 with fretted, but these days I'm playing 99% fretted. I'm not playing professionally as much as I used to due to the demands of school and work, and with upcoming medical school bills I'm trying to be financially prudent.

Given that I have a Hyperbass on the way (well, ordered years ago!), I just can't justify keeping two fretless basses. I love this bass, and after having played easily over 100 Zons, I can definitely conclude that it is the best sounding Zon fretless ever made. So much so, in fact, that my Hyperbass's specs are based directly on this instrument, including the color!! This instrument is incredible.

I don't want to do it, but it is the responsible thing to do. There will be more "responsible" sales coming up, even if I dont *need* the money.

The specs are:
Zon Legacy Std 5
- bolt on neck, 17mm spacing
- unlined fretless board with gloss finish (rare)
- solid figured maple body in trans green (also rare, and their best color!)
- Bart dual pickups
- Polyfusion 2-band pre
- black hardware (Hipshot A bridge and ultralite tuners, both brand new)

The bass overall is in very good condition, though it has the odd mark here and there. I'll get updated pictures with new hardware later today.

The neck is dead straight with light strings and just a slight bit of relief with heavy strings. It does not have a truss rod, but is still correctly adjusted, so no worries there (more on this below).

Price is FIRM $1850 + shipping- comes with a brand new Zon gigbag.

If you want a brand new, fitted Zon hardshell case, let me know and I can get one for you. I'll just charge the cost from Zon (I'll include the invoice to prove that I didn't make money off of it).

Similarly, if you want a truss rod installed, let me know and I can take it to Joe for you to have it installed. I live right nearby and am good friends with him, so it's easy. You can set it up to pay him after purchasing from me, or however you want it. But I can help facilitate it. Honestly though, some older Zon's need the rod, but it's rare. This one does not need one added by any means.

If you want me to install a different preamp in it with the sale, ship me the preamp and I'll throw it in free. I also have an Aguilar OBP-1 and OBP-3 I can throw in for $50.

Pictures from Brad- will get some brighter pictures with the updated hardware today.

Wow, that`s amazing !!
Only a Hyperbass can justify selling such a beauty.

Good luck with the sale Angus.

Never played a fretless bass but if I was interested in, I would have bought this is seconds. Angus, your bass is a real beauty.
Bump for you!

I'd keep it if it were fretted, too- if only because I love this bass and I play 99% fretted. But this bass is incredibly voiced for fretless.

Technically, if anyone wanted to purchase it and have the truss installed, it could be converted to fretted at the same time, probably for little/no extra cost.

Hmmmm......I'd like it to be fretted. Can you find out the cost to have your guy make it fretted, or maybe it really is no cost?

Definitely- the cost would be in installing the truss rod, which involves removing the fretboard, setting the neck up to take the truss rod, putting on a new fretboard and refinishing the neck. In that sense, fretless versus fretted is an easy change. Hell, the headstock could even be capped with a matching laminate.

I'll drop by Zon's shop today (need to get strings anyway) and ask them about it and PM you!

As mentioned, this is a killer fretless that I found to stand head and shoulders above most of the fretlesses I'd came across before and since. In fact it's in my top three (I still have the other two). I'm doing more "work" type gigs these days so I have less opportunity to play fretless... don't even get to play my fretless six out very much.

This bass can purr or hit extremely hard. Extremely punchy for slap. That's what I've noticed about the discontinued Legacy Standard bolt-on models over the setneck Legacies. It's the bass that made me realize that fretlesses can do far more than most people think. It took years to finally decide to let it go and Angus is the first person I thought of.

GLWS.

You could certainly come see it in that time, though! I'm not far from San Jose.

And thanks for the comments Brad- it means a lot. I don't want to sell this by any means, but I never get time to play fretless anymore, as any free time I get I need to spend on fretted. This is one of my favorite basses I've ever touched, but I've been bitten by this practicality bug over the last year (something about the prospect of going $250k into debt over the next few years) that drives this. I don't want to get rid of it, but I know it makes more sense to.

I'll have answers later today, by the way.

Wow. Just wow. This bass is just stunning. I have to keep telling myself that I don't need a fretless five string ...

Good luck on the sale. If I wasn't trying to pay off some bills myself I would have snatched this one up in a heartbeat.

And be sure and post pics of your Hyperbass when you get it! What are the specs on it?

More pictures! Turned out a bit darker than intended, but you get the idea.

Turns out I also put a detuner on it (which helps if you tune E-C). I didn't remember, and would've probably increased the price a bit to account for that, too, but forgot. So, erm, well, I guess it's included!

I should mention, too, that the bass is potentially sold, but is not yet finalized.
