    Since this isnt a real cheap bass, I wouldn't recommend doing anything permanent to it that you cant fix if it goes wrong.

    That is what I did. I jumped from 4 to 6. It worked well for me.

    Possible nut/tuning peg problem?

    If you want a little more tension on the strings, leave it uncut like they said, and also make sure that you wind the string around the nut so...

    Where to start? 4 or 5 string?

    I would go for a used Fender Jazz if I were in your posistion. You should be able to get one in good shape for around $750 or so.
