i want to thank everyone for such insightful and helpful suggestions. i think i really have difficult strings combined with lousy technique....
i am using plain g and d guts strings and having difficulty getting a decent warm sound. very frustrating sounding like crap.

yes, oil them when getting dry. i do mine at least twice a week. they will last a long time.
