I started playing in my friend's garage at 13 (1994) with his dad's acoustic guitar. I had no idea what I was doing, but I knew I needed to learn more. I taught myself electric guitar with some Hal Leonard books and joined my high school's jazz band waaay too soon to be of any use on a 6 string in a jazz ensemble  lol
Luckily, they had a beaten-up 1978 Fender P-bass in storage and asked me to replace the girl on keys (who was playing all the bass parts). I feel like if it wasn't for this particular bass I might have gone in a different direction musically. It sang. It was such an eye-opening experience once I got my hands on that thing. That lead to playing the double bass and I've never looked back from providing the low-end.
I've been playing bass since 1996 and now, in my 30's, I've finally found a band that fits like a glove. Long journey's are always the best though.
