What an awesome piece of gear! I never had an Ampeg, and I've been using Solid State heads for the last 20 years, but I wanted to get some tubes into my arsenal, and this was the perfect choice.

Since I'm use to 100% USA made gear, I was concerned about quality, and since I typically use a 800- 1200 watt heads and full stacks, I was really concerned about volume.

I'm thrilled to say that the build quality, aesthetics, and logical design of this head are TOP NOTCH!!! it has the same pre amp as the SVT Classic (or so they say), so it can easily sound like its big brother.

While it's very basic in its controls, you can get a lot of unique and distinct tones from it, so for something so simple, I find it very versatile as well.

I love this head so much, that I immediately bought the SVT Heritage CL, and I can tell you, they do sound identical, if you so choose to make them sound that way. The V4B has a MUCH nicer appearance than the SVT Heritage, and the super cool retro vibe completely blows away the dull look of the Heritage...

As for volume, my drummer is a speed metal, heavy hitter, and my guitarists are ridiculous shred heads, playing at atomic volumes, through Mesa and Marshall tube stacks, and the little V4B crushes them all through whatever cab I run it through... but I like it best through my two Markbass 410s, or through my mesa PH412.

I haven't had to turn the gain up over 1/3 or the master up over 1/2 yet.

So, if saving weight, saving money, sounding AWESOME, and looking killer are what you desire... look no further than the V4B. I own the SVT Heritage, the Mesa Strategy 88, the Markbass Little Tube 800, and the Markbass SD1200, and the V4B is my favorite!
