I really like the effect, but it has some side effects.
I got one of these on Ebay a few years ago to play around with. Mine was used and it turned out the 9vDC power connector on the pedal didnt work so I used an adapter to convert the 9v plug to a connector I could run to my voodoo labs power supply.
The sounds this pedal can create are pretty impressive but definately a limited usage. I also found in some cases the output was so much louder than the input I had to drop my bass volume down to avoid blowing people away when I engaged this pedal.
A fun toy. Ended up taking it off my pedal board pretty quickly.
I use this mainly during when I am attempting to slap and on some funk cover songs. Its good on some older RHCP songs although I am sure its not the same pedal Flea uses but I dont have the money or resources Flea has so its good for that type of stuff.
Like the other person said its tough and will outlast anything you have ever owned and its better operated without the battery and on a board that can control the power that it will consume.
I do find that it takes a bit of the bottom away but it is an envelope filter and basically like a flanger but with less control. I play an Ernie HH Stingray and mostly keep it at 10 am and never use the distortion switch. And I also notice that it increases the volume so often times I have to adjust my volume dial back a bit when I stomp it on.
Otherwise its a beast and does exactly what is says. No frills, no extra stuff. just ball ball ball ball ball base ball
Who doesn't know Pink Floyds "Young Lust" with that strange bass sound in it? Well, that's a BassBalls pedal, a very old one.
The newer NANO series BassBalls has a distortion function added, which makes (limited) sense.
Let me make something clear right from the start: This stompbox is a funny little toy, but while other kinds of effects are more generally accepted, this one is very limited to your personal taste and it is quite easily possible to ruin your overall band sound with this thing. So, use it with caution and treat it for what it is: More or less a funny joke.
Like everything from EHX, this thing is build like a tank, to last until the end of time. I accidentally stepped on it with my full weight and it still works.
Like all EHX stompboxes, inserting a battery is a pain in the ass (you have to open up the whole stompbox with 4 screws). So, use external power instead.
Setup should be simple, but it is NOT. One knob, one switch, how hard can it be? Well, this unit runs two different envelope filters and the one-knob thingy is crucial, because you need to find the sweet spot that matches your bass signal output. For me personally (on a Dingwall NG-2), that is at 11:30.
Once you have found the sweetspot, your P-Bass sounds like Rodger Water's in "Yound Lust". Activate the distortion for some even stranger sounds.
What I will add to this is that this pedals "steals" a serious amount of your low-end and signal strength.
Again, this thing is highly depending on your personal choice. I usually run it in parallel with a EHX BigMuff PI at some very restricted spots in our set list. We play with one bass, one guitar, and this combination allows to fill some guitar-less spots with a slightly more intersting sound.
As above, Sounds terrible, distortion is nothing of any interest, response/phase knob is impossible to get to any decent effect, completely incompatible with any type of distortion as well.
