I bought this bass without ever having seen one in person, and I am so impressed. I have always had Fender or Squier basses, the Jazz and Precision are works of art, but I have always found myself wishing I had my P bass if I only brought my Jazz to the gig, or vice versa. When the Jaguar bass was first unveiled, it was neat, but it was just a churched up jazz bass. When they brought out the Squier vintage modified Jaguars with the PJ setup, they hit the nail on the head. I have a Vm Jaguar bass special I bought years ago and it has always been my favorite bass for practice with the band, and it was the deciding factor behind me pulling the trigger on this bass. I’ve only had it a few days now, but I am thoroughly impressed with it. The Alnico V pickups have so much more depth than the old ceramic pickups in my MIM Jazz bass, the maple neck is smooth and fast and finished beautifully. The body is perfectly both the P bass and the Jazz bass, and neither of them at the same time. It is unmistakably Fender, but it’s also a perfect compromise. You get the glorious one-two punch of the split P single coil pickup in the middle, and the growling snarl of the J pickup at the bridge. I ordered mine from GC.com so it came in a box but I only had to do some minimal tweaks to make it the smoothest, fastest playing bass I have ever owned. Also, the tidepool finish is beautiful, I am going to swap the pickguard for a tortoise shell, because I think it compliments the blue well. If you find yourself wishing you had both your P bass and your Jazz bass while gigging, you should definitely give the Fender Player Jaguar bass a closer look.
