    Sadowsky SBP-1 vs SBP-2 + J48

That was really helpful. What about the output volume of Sadowsky SBP-1, compared to other active DI boxes? My J48 has a hot output (much hotter than JDI), which I like.

    Sadowsky SBP-1 vs SBP-2 + J48

Did you have the chance to compare the DI output with other DI boxes? Any noticeable difference?

    Sadowsky SBP-1 vs SBP-2 + J48

I don't have any intermediary effects, just sending my dry signal. I'm curious if J48 sounds "better" (whatever that means) than SBP-1 and if there would be a compromise in terms of noise, signal level, etc. I don't have the chance to test a SBP-1, that's why I'm looking for advice.

Thanks for the reply. I was wondering about sound quality, noise potential, signal level, etc. actually - any comments on those?

    Sadowsky SBP-1 vs SBP-2 + J48

Hey folks, a quick question. In some gigs, I run a passive P bass through my Sadowsky SBP-2 (with battery) into a Radial J48, which goes to the desk. But it is possible to simplify this setup and run into a Sadowsky SBP-1 directly, which has a DI output anyway. Would simplifying into a single...

Fender American Professional II P bass

My American Pro II P V (five strings, maple) is a magnificent beast, which gets playtime in my highest paying gigs. Very comfortable to play and I like its string-to-string balance. Can jump anywhere on the neck without worries. Sounds great through the obvious Ampeg preamp. Highly recommended.

Which Aguilar cab to extend an SL 112?

To any future reader wondering what I did... Put my Aguilar stuff on sale, and got my hands on an Ampeg Venture V3 and VB-210 setup. Couldn't be happier. I was able to get a crystal tone with tight lows and clear highs on default mode - just what I was looking for. To my ears; B15 mode leans...

Anyone gig with just a preamp pedal?

I don't feel the necessity to run my signal through additional knobs when the venue has a professional mixing desk and a paid engineer to take care of the tone - who can hear the FoH sound (unlike me on stage). With active basses, I typically run into a DI directly. With passive basses, I...

    Are practice amps becoming obsolete?

I value a good amp at home, it is arguably the only place to enjoy "the taste" of my beloved basses. On most rehearsals, we play on sub-par systems. On most gigs, we hear ourself either through monitors or in-ears - both sound sub-par. No place like home. YMMV - especially if you have great...

My Squier sounds as good as a £2k MIA

The deciding factor between cheap / expensive instruments is rarely the sound - it is easy to make them sound similar. How the bass feels and makes me play - that's important to me. Once I find an instrument without "hygiene" flaws and with good "motivators", I don't mind what's written on the...

Which Aguilar cab to extend an SL 112?

Thanks for the suggestion, but customs regulations in my country practically disable international orders. Gotta stick to what's available in local stores.

Which Aguilar cab to extend an SL 112?

Long story short; I have an Aguilar AG 700 + SL 112 setup. The cab has a mid-heavy response; so, I'm aiming at adding some bottom end and clear highs by throwing in an extra cab. Or replacing the SL 112 altogether if I must. I'm using 5 strings exclusively - a nice B response would be great...

Quest for the "perfect" 5 string p bass (for me)

That was my exact finding with Yamaha BBP's. Their pickups seem to be designed for a good blend instead of individual power you would expect from a P. That's why I sold my BBP - despite making a special order and waiting a few months for its arrival. I happen to possess two of the alternative...

Modern cab for Aguilar AG 700?

Modern cab for Aguilar AG 700?

I have been using an AG 700 with Aguilar SL 112 for quite a while, but my ears grew tired of the baked-in mid oriented sound of SL 112. I'm looking for a modern sounding cab primarily for home use, where a 5 string StingRay / L-2500 / Sadowsky Modern would shine with a solid low end and biting...

    NBD: UGR

They are passive instruments and I didn't apply any EQ to them. That could be the reason why. Don't let the extra knobs on the J fool you - they are "producer knobs" if you know what I mean :smug:

    NBD: UGR

Objectively speaking: Sadowsky and UGR have allegedly the same electronics, but my Sadowsky M5 was produced in Japan, while my recent parts were ordered from Warwick. They might be different under the hood. Sadowsky has a light chambered body, UGR has a relatively heavy one-piece body Sadowsky...

I'm happy to share with you folks that I finally got my hands on my custom made bass! The bass was made by Ugur Elcik; a Turkish luthier operating in Istanbul. He has built instruments for renown players in Turkiye before, he knows what he's doing. The main idea behind this instrument was to...

I need a distinct bass for each string type (flat - round), and a backup/travel/stunt bass to each main bass; which makes 4.

    Let’s talk fretboard wood

My favorite is maple because it's a low-maintenance wood. Combine that with steel frets, and you'll have a self-sustaining fingerboard for ages. Ah, and I love the snappy sound provided by maple as well. If you think the fingerboard doesn't affect the sound, mind you, Roger Sadowsky thinks...

    Different Basses for Different Things

My approach: different "strings" for different things. I like using flats for old-school or upright-ish stuff and rounds for everything else. So, I pick flats for some gigs and rounds for others, each paired with an appropriate bass. For the record, my current "flat bass" is a Fender P5, and my...

Pre-Amp / EQ Pedal Recommendations for P Bass

Since I run directly to the desk most of the time, I like to use a basic pedal preamp between my passive P and the DI box. The Sadowsky preamp works very well to add a little oomph and clarity by slightly boosting the bass and treble, and it can run on batteries. The Origin DCX Bass has a...

    Offset Bodies, Yay, or Nay?

On my Sadowsky M5, I align the left hook of the stand with the B string on the bridge. Stays pretty balanced.

    Offset Bodies, Yay, or Nay?

Offset bodies used to give me anxiety because they wouldn't stay balanced enough on many backline stands. Then I discovered the foldable GS402BB stand by Hercules, which fits into my Mono Tick easily and keeps offset basses balanced. Now I have two of those and don't mind bass shapes anymore.

The magic of a tone knob

When I'm gigging with a passive bass, I usually set the tone control to 100% and let the sound engineer do their job. I wouldn’t know how the bass and mix sound in the venue; the sound engineer can reduce the top end if needed, but they can't add back what I've taken away with the tone control...

    Flatwounds - hand fatigue?

Hey fellows... I've researched this subject but couldn't find a direct answer, so here we go... I don't have any hand fatigue problems with round strings - even on very long shows. However, when I play a show with flats, the muscles in my hands and wrist-to-forearms get tired and sore for a day...

    2 compressors?

Most decent FOH desks have built-in compressors. During soundcheck, you can send the sound engineer your lowest and highest (effected) signal levels, so they can set the compression accordingly. This might negate the need for the second compressor/limiter pedal. I don't use pedals much anymore...

Darkglass B7K Ultra vs A/O Ultra?

Unsolicited advice: Any Darkglass Ultra pedal I've tried has introduced noise into my signal chain, while the deluxe ones haven't. If you have any plans of putting them on your pedalboard later on, make sure to check for noise early on.

    Auto/wah, Envelope filters????

You can place a compressor before the envelope filter to balance your bass's output. For similar reasons, I gave up on envelope filters. Instead, I use phasers, which (subjectively) provide a similar vibe regardless of the signal level. My favorites are the Aguilar Grape Phaser and the MXR...

    Bass quality
