Double Bass Looking for vehicle recommendations - what can the DB fit into?

Personally, I wouldn’t let the bass influence your vehicle choice too much. Like don’t spend more than you would’ve just because of the bass. The bass on the front seat works very well. I got around with a 4 door Honda Civic for my college years. And it fits just fine in my Subaru WRX now...

    Sentimental Bass?

My first bass, a MIM Jazz definitely. but more so is the AVRI P Bass. 10 years ago I gifted it to my now late father. While I knew that this would be sentimentality in the making, I am so happy that I was able to give him it before he passed, and am able to keep the family heirlooms with the...

    Roundwounds....how old do you go?

I like fresh bright rounds, am I’m happy to change them 6-12 months. That is for DR high beams or EB Slinky’s. Side note: I’m changing my upright strings for the first time in 18 years. Those are like $250 a set (range from $180 or can be up to $600 for some gut sets.) Most active players...

Double Bass Another help me choose strings thread

Thanks for all the input. I’m thinking about going with the Spiros. I don’t play on sections, or much love if any orchestral. Most everything I do is amplified. My ability level is pretty low, so I can work with the arco sound get comfortable with it. There’s a lot of reading on string...

Double Bass Another help me choose strings thread

Wait wait, I double checked my winding colors! I think I have Helicore mediums. They are blue w yellow stripe at tail piece, with brass disk. And winding silks are green, black, yellow, and red. My mistake.

    No one cares...

I’d expect more from a guitar player. If you told him that his Tele sounded good and he has playing a Les Paul, he’d surely be a little offended.

Double Bass Another help me choose strings thread

I’m looking for the guidance for getting a new set of strings. I am a life long student level player, as in had some lessons and know just enough to be dangerous. But never paid much attention to the strings. The bass I bought has had the same set of [edit Helicore Mediums, not Permanents]...

Tell me why I need a drop D tuner

I removed drop tuners from my basses. I never used it and don’t play the stuff that needs drop D. I play 5 strings mostly. I can’t get the drop D pattern change just for the low notes. If it was for a drop D riff, I get the purpose. But I’d rather tune standard D, or play a 5 string...

What are you working on at the moment?

I just got the book for a high school production of a musical called The Drowsy Chaperone. So I’ll be getting the upright back in shape over the next few weeks.

And we jam, and it's launched by the guitarist, a blues, again.....

When it’s casual and I’m bored, I usually play walking jazz blues with ii-V-I turnarounds. Keeps my brain more engaged.

    Tube driven Pedals.

I used to use an EHX Black Finger Compressor. It was good. I set it clean. I stopped using it because of the size and the large high voltage and current wall wart. It wasn’t practical for a smaller board.

No one is forcing you to mess with the knobs. Just set it to a good sound and play. The pre amp is part of the sound.

What year did you start playing bass?

1999 at the age of 13. My dad took me to the guitar store and I picked an Arctic White jazz bass. As a kid he had a mid 60s P bass in the gray color. But the jazz bass had more knobs so it seemed “better” at the time. And white was the closest to gray.

My head says P, my heart wants J.

Jazz Basses are great. Since you’re doing the recording, you get to choose how it sits in the mix during the mixing. Also, despite what TalkBass says, the soloed neck pickup of J is pretty close, but not exactly, but quite close to a P bass sound. With technic, the right strings, muting...

Meh guitar player about to begin playing bass

Welcome to the world of bass. Even though you are a guitar player, you’re already thinking like a bass player. Along with all the technical advice, I’d say, think more like a drummer than a guitar player. As in when to play, when to leave space, and when and how long the notes should be. How...

Moving away from anchored thumb habit - how long did it take you?

My teacher in college introduced me to floating thumb, so I had a good two years of pretty focused study noticing plucking hand muting. There are a few versions of floating thumb technique, but muting strings cannot be ignored! So while I’ll stop short of saying thumb anchored on pickup is...

What are the cons of PJs, or: Why don’t you have a PJ?

My feeling is that a PJ is something different from a P or J. I do have a PJ that I did as a project bass. But I kind of have that bias against PJs, as in I don’t feel like they are the best of both worlds.

    Active or passive basses?

Some people poo poo active basses. I own both. It’s not a big deal. It’s just a knob to adjust. There are knobs on pedals, there are knobs on amps, there are knobs on passive basses. Some active onboard electronics are pretty distinct, ie StingRay so there’s that. It’s just an option to...

Difference between guitar and bass amp?

On a side note, keyboard amps make good bass amps in a pinch. They are usually full range and can handle lows, just without the bass guitar specific EQ tools. I’ve played bass through several Fender, Roland, and other no name keyboard amps in school and churches with good results.

    NBD-$70 MIM Precision

Yep, you are right, that was a fair deal. Also, it didn’t play that well til I did some leveling to the fingerboard, so that’s probably why even GC had it at that price. I am still super happy with the bass, so it was great for me.

I Hate To Be Picky ...

The tone is in your plectrum. No need to worry about stigmas with playing one way or another. There are a lot of pick types that can help vary the sound. There are a lot of pick playing styles that are not straight ahead rock or metal. Think Bobby Vega, or Carol Kaye. Both famous pick players...

Arctic White American Performer Jazz Bass?

Just for another reference point, the Jazz on the right is a 1999 MIM in Arctic White, the P is 2012 AVRI in translucent white nitro. In a photo with mediocre lighting and a white background. Lol.
